postdoctoral researcher positions in carbon cycle modelling
and data assimilation at Lund University, Sweden<br>
<br>
The Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (<a
class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="https://www.nateko.lu.se">https://www.nateko.lu.se</a>)
is seeking to appoint two postdoctoral researchers with a
strong background in terrestrial ecology, carbon cycle
modelling, data assimilation, remote sensing, applied
mathematics or physics.<br>
<br>
The appointees will be part of a vibrant and international
team within the Department of Physical Geography and Ecosystem
Science. The department operates and further develops the
world-leading biosphere model LPJ-GUESS as well as the Carbon
Cycle Data Assimilation System capable of quantifying
terrestrial sources and sinks of carbon dioxide through the
assimilation of various data sources (atmospheric CO2
concentrations, satellite-derived vegetation activity, in-situ
flux measurements etc.).<br>
<br>
The first position is part of the newly funded European
project CHE (<a href="https://www.che-project.eu">https://www.che-project.eu</a>).
The project will explore the development of a European system
to monitor human activity related carbon dioxide (CO2)
emissions across the world. For this the Department of
Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science will work on
developing, testing and applying a coupled carbon cycle fossil
fuel data assimilation system. Both a carbon cycle data
assimilation and a fossil fuel data assimilation system are
already existing and have been developed at the Department of
Physical Geography and Ecosystem Science (INES), Lund
University (CCDAS) and the international collaborator at
University of Melbourne (FFDAS). The appointee will be a
member of the inverse modelling group; he/she will work on the
coupling as well as further development of the system together
with the project partners and international collaborators.<br>
<br>
The second position focuses on the development of a
seasonally-resolved carbon allocation-phenology scheme in
LPJ-GUESS based on new mechanistic understanding and data.
Specific tasks include data compilation, literature review and
model development focused on the core physiological mechanisms
responsible for the allocation of biomass to plant tissues and
compartments, and the resulting responses to environmental and
climate variations, land use and nutrient cycles. Lund
University heads an international consortium engaged in the
ongoing development of LPJ-GUESS. The envisaged upgrades will
support to the worldwide community of users performing
research using the model.<br>
<br>
The posts will be available for 24 months, with a preferred
starting date of June 2018.<br>
<br>
Closing date for applications: 09 April 2018<br>
<br>
Lund University welcomes applicants with diverse backgrounds
and experiences. We regard gender equality and diversity as a
strength and an asset.<br>
