The successful candidate will join a transdisciplinary research team to support the social science analysis of two central areas of concern: (i) the role of values in climate change science and risk management and (ii) how attention to stakeholder values can serve to improve decision making under conditions of risk and uncertainty. The aim of the position is to better understand and improve decision support and risk communication that takes account of the values and goals of stakeholders and helps to ensure that decision makers are best equipped to identify and assess trade-offs between values, objectives and strategies. The project has been developing an approach to mental model analysis that includes the mapping of values, both those of stakeholders and experts. The postdoctoral scholar will have opportunities to work in a variety of settings, including coastal management in New Orleans and forestry management with the Menominee Nation in the context of changing climates. The scholar will assist in evaluating climate risk management communication and decision tools in experimental as well as real-life settings. The ideal candidate would have experience evaluating decision support tools, a strong background in a social science field including risk management, experience with mental model or related approaches to decision making, an appreciation of the role values play in decision making, and experience with decision support tools. An understanding of climate change mitigation, adaptation, and geoengineering strategies is desirable. The successful candidate must be interested in and able to collaborate on transdisciplinary research involving Earth scientists, statisticians, decision analysts, economists, and philosophers. Postdoctoral scholars are expected to collaborate on established projects and will have considerable freedom to collaboratively design the research in the areas outlined above. Information about ongoing projects as well as publications can be found at: http://scrimhub.org/research/publications/. This position is part of a larger-scale hiring initiative (see http://scrimhub.org/opportunities/employment/). The position is available immediately and will remain open until filled. The initial appointment will be for a period of one year, with excellent possibility of renewal for one or more additional years. Please upload a letter of interest, CV, reprints or submitted versions of two relevant manuscripts, and contact information for three professional references.
