<p class="MsoNormal">The University of Delaware invites nominations
and
applications for the position of Dean of the College of Earth,
Ocean, and
Environment.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The Dean
provides academic
leadership for 72 core faculty, 20 programs and research centers
in 1 School
(the School of Marine Science and Policy) and 2 departments
(Geography and
Geological Sciences) in an interdisciplinary college that
currently has 407
undergraduate and 128 graduate students. Including contracts and
grants, the
overall budget for the activities in the College exceeds $55
million. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We seek an accomplished scientist with an
international
reputation in a relevant discipline, and demonstrated
administrative
experience.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The successful
candidate
will catalyze new synergies and chart innovative directions in
research and
education, with concurrent goals of driving basic discoveries to
achieve a
better understanding of Earth and Ocean processes, and training of
the next
generations of scientists, to enable society cope with the
challenges of
sustaining a habitable world amidst rapidly changing conditions.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The Dean will provide vision and leadership for
the college
to support the overarching educational mission of the University
of Delaware,
espousing its values of academic rigor, intellectual engagement,
creativity,
and innovation, relying on the following qualifications:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
with an
outstanding academic record consistent with a senior faculty
appointment. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Experience in recruiting and retaining
faculty of excellence.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Ability to manage a complex academic
enterprise in a
collaborative manner.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Ability to foster both vigorous research
programs and
excellent, innovative undergraduate and graduate education across
the breadth
of disciplines within the college. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Ability to promote the college’s interests
with internal
and external constituencies within the State and at the
national/international
level. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• Commitment to interdisciplinary and
multicultural
education, with a record of promoting diversity. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">• An earned doctorate or equivalent degree in
one of the
disciplines or related fields in the College of Earth, Ocean, and
Environment.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The Dean has control over the budget and
responsibility for
balancing funding priorities.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>Reporting
directly to the Provost, the Dean occupies a key role in the life
of the
University and must function effectively as part of the central
administrative
team, and participate actively in University development
activities.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Founded in 1743, the University of Delaware’s
beautiful main
campus is located in Newark, Delaware, an attractive college town
within two
hours of New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C.<span
style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>With one of the most
beautiful campuses on
the East Coast, UD is a community of 18,000 undergraduate, 3,800
graduate, and
700 continuing education students.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes">
</span>UD
offers 140 bachelor’s programs, 121 master’s programs, 61 doctoral

and 15 dual degree graduate programs.<span

at the
University are approximately $200 million annually.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment
has faculty,
staff, students, and facilities on the main campus in Newark,
Del., which is
the research and teaching base for faculty in geography,
geological sciences,
marine policy, and physical ocean sciences and engineering, and at
the 62-acre
Hugh R. Sharp Campus in Lewes, Del., the research and teaching
base for faculty
in marine biosciences and oceanography. Although these campuses
are physically
located 90 miles apart, the learning and interaction is fully
connected through
our ITV classrooms.<span style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span><o:p></o:p></p>
