ESG provides academic education and research on our living environment: the atmosphere, soil, water, nature, landscape and land usage. Knowledge is applied for adaptation to climate change, ocean management, competing claims on space, biodiversity and the

<p class="Default"><b><span style="font-size:10.0pt">Project </span></b><span style="font-size:10.0pt">The PhD vacancy is for the project “ Space-based ASsessment of Ozone Deposition and its Impact on Ecosystem functioning: SASODIE” funded by the Dutch Scientific
Organisation (NWO). Ozone is an important greenhouse gas but also a pollutant at the surface. Deposition of ozone on vegetation reduces photosynthesis and hence the net primary productivity (NPP) of the biophere and climate. Assessments of the ozone deposition
impact on vegetation are generally limited to small scale laboratory- and tower measurements. SASODIE aims to integrate atmospheric composition and land surface remote sensing observations with atmospheric chemistry and land surface models in a data-assimilationsystem
to infer ecosystem-scale ozone deposition and to assess its impact on ecosystem NPP and carbon exchange under contrasting climate and pollution conditions.

<p class="Default"><b><span style="font-size:10.0pt">Tasks </span></b><span style="font-size:10.0pt">The PhD student will conduct analysis of long-term meteorological, air quality and plant functioning field observations to assess the impact of ozone on ecosystem
functioning. The PhD student will also develop a data-assimilation system that integrates atmospheric composition and land surface remote sensing observations with an atmospheric chemistry and land surface model to simulate ecosystem-scale ozone deposition
fluxes being evaluated with the field observations. The system will then be applied to assess the role of ozone deposition in ecosystem productivity for contrasting climate and pollution conditions relative to other drivers of NPP. During the PhD you will
write several scientific publications that will be combined in a PhD thesis. <o:p>
