We seek an enthusiastic research scientist to
undertake research into tropical-extratropical atmospheric
teleconnections on sub-seasonal and seasonal timescales as part of
a wider international project (InterDec) on interactions between
the tropical and extra-tropical climate system. In collaboration
with scientists at the European Centre for Medium Range Weather
Forecasting, you will use re-analysis, and re-forecast sets from
the ECMWF sub-seasonal and seasonal forecasting systems and the
WMO S2S Prediction Project and modelling experiments within
InterDec to analyse the dynamical mechanisms of
tropical-extratropical teleconnections. The focus will be on
tropical sub-seasonal variability as a source of predictability
for sub-seasonal variability in the extra-tropics and its
potential rectification onto longer timescales, including
relationships between the MJO and: the NAO; Sudden Stratospheric
Warmings and strong stratospheric vortex regimes; and Arctic-sea
ice, and their subsequent influence on high-latitude tropospheric
weather.
