Research Center invites applications for a research scientist position in
Weather Research and Forecasting (<span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">WRF</span>) soil moisture data assimilation.
The planned weather- and climate-relevant research will involve extensive
numerical weather forecast model (<span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">WRF</span>) evaluation and code
modification to implement satellite data assimilation of <span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">NASA</span> Soil Moisture Active Passive (<span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">SMAP</span>) soil moisture retrievals. The successful candidate
will: conduct <span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">WRF</span>and <span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">NASA</span> Land
Information System (<span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">LIS</span>) simulations; carry out data
analysis and visualization using Python, <span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">NCL</span> or similar
scripting language; and design and write creative and innovative peer-reviewed
journal articles on soil moisture data assimilation and <span style="border:1pt none windowtext;padding:0in">WRF</span> configuration sensitivity in the context of
short-term (9-30 h) weather (incl. wind) predictability over the U.S.</span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:12pt;text-align:justify;line-height:13.5pt;vertical-align:baseline;background-image:initial;background-repeat:initial"><span style="font-family:Verdana,sans-serif;color:black">A starting date of January 31, 2017 or earlier is preferred. The
initial appointment is expected to be for one year and is renewable pending
performance and availability of funds. Salary is approximately $60,000 per
year. Limited funding will be made available for travel to conferences and
