Background and Position Description

Boise State University in Boise, Idaho is pleased to announce an exciting
opportunity in modeling land use change and urbanization. In support of a
statewide National Science Foundation grant (IIA-1301792) and expanding
research capacity in Human-Environment Systems, the researcher will conduct
regional-scale spatial modeling of land use. Datasets and scenarios that you
develop as a postdoc will support hydrologic modeling of managed systems and
estimation of the future spatial distribution of domestic, commercial,
municipal, and industrial water use.

As the postdoctoral researcher, your primary research duties will be to:

1) Develop and apply spatial population, urbanization, and land use models
in a region experiencing significant exogenous pressures on land use
systems,
2) Analyze extant demographic, socioeconomic, infrastructure, water rights
and land use data to inform and develop plausible alternative scenarios
of land use change,
3) Work collaboratively with a team of cross-disciplinary biophysical and
social scientists, and develop appropriate collaborations/exchanges at
institutions outside of Boise State.

When hired you will join the Human-Environment Systems (HES) Initiative at
Boise State, which includes biophysical and social scientists interested in
modeling coupled food-energy-water systems, wildlife-human-ecosystem
interactions, land use system dynamics, and the role of social learning on
environmental management. The HES Initiative is administratively housed in
Boise State’s College of Innovation and Design, but collaborates closely
with faculty from departments across campus including Geosciences, Biological
Sciences, Anthropology, and Public Policy and Administration.

Position Requirements, Qualifications, and Compensation

geography, land use science, geoscience, civil and environmental engineering,
urban studies and planning, remote sensing, ecosystem science) at the time of
appointment.

These criteria will be used to assess your fitness for the position:

1) Expertise in geospatial data and modeling,
2) Experience with remote sensing products used to derive spatiotemporal
land use information and assess model predictions,
3) Proficiency in at least one scientific programming language (Python, R,
and/or Matlab preferred),
4) Familiarity with the use of geographical information systems.

Funding is available for up to two years, provided successful review and
satisfactory research progress after the first year of employment.
Anticipated salary for the position is $45,000 per year with an excellent
