The position calls for an individual with expertise in extreme climate processes, climate modeling, and the interaction between extremes and the hydrologic cycle. You will focus on systematically improving our understanding of extreme climate phenomena and their drivers, including anthropogenic influences. The work will focus on several important types of hydrologically-relevant extremes, including tropical cyclones, extratropical cyclones, floods, and droughts. The goal of this position is to build fundamental understanding of the processes that control these phenomena, and how they interact with the hydrologic cycle, in order to improve confidence in long-term projections of the hydrologic cycle. The position entails using a combination of theory; high-resolution, state of the science models; and observational data (e.g., in situ and satellite) in order to improve process-level understanding of extremes and to develop strategies for reducing uncertainty in extremes--possibly by improving their representation—in climate model projections.
