The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation
(BOR), is recruiting a Climate Change Policy Intern to enroll in our
AmeriCorps program while completing a Direct Hire Authority Resource
Assistant Internship (DHA-RAI). The Direct Hire Authority provides land and
water management agencies the opportunity to appoint Resource Assistants
who successfully complete a rigorous internship to permanent, competitive
service positions within two years from the date they complete their
undergraduate or graduate degree. This opportunity offers a pathway to
permanent federal civil service employment.

Description:
In 2016, the West-Wide Climate Risk Assessment (WWCRA) regional
implementation team began a west-wide effort to evaluate the use of climate
change projections for use in drought forecasting and the use of existing
tools available to support drought planning efforts for water resources.
The goal of this effort is to develop WWCRA guidance that identifies
climate change tools and data for drought contingency planning.

The focus of the Climate Change Policy internship will be to conduct a
literature review to assess available climate based drought forecasting
tools and techniques to predict drought on-set and duration based on
long-term, inter-annual, and seasonal climatic processes. The results of
the literature review will inform policy-makers who will draft guidance to
support Reclamation and western stakeholders in identifying available
climate change information and tools for drought contingency planning. The
peer reviewed literature review will become a technical appendix to the
WWCRA guidance document and could also be used to prepare a professional
publication.
