<p class="MsoNormal">A postdoctoral position is available to use Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy to quantify organic functional groups in urban and rural aerosols from the SouthEastern Aerosol Research and Characterization (SEARCH) Network (<a href="http://www.atmospheric-research.com/studies/SEARCH/index.html">http://www.atmospheric-research.com/studies/SEARCH/index.html</a>).
The overall goal of SEARCH is to obtain comprehensive air pollution measurements to study particulate matter composition and health. The post-doctoral scholar will produce laboratory standards for multiple organic functional groups, develop partial least
squares calibrations, and apply the results to FT-IR spectra of ambient samples to quantify functional groups and estimate organic matter to organic carbon (OM/OC) and oxygen to carbon (O/C) ratios. The goal of the work is to evaluate seasonal, urban/rural
and in-land/coastal variability and long-term trends in aerosol organic composition. This extends previous work by our group quantifying organic functional groups in one year of ambient aerosol samples in the IMPROVE network (Ruthenburg et al., 2014,
<span style="background:#F8F8F8">Determination of organic matter and organic matter to organic carbon ratios by infrared spectroscopy with application to selected sites in the IMPROVE network,
</span><i>Atmospheric Environment, </i>86, 47-57,<i> </i>10.1016/j.atmosenv.2013.12.034). The initial appointment is for one year with additional years contingent upon mutual agreement. The position includes health insurance and other benefits.
