<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Reporting to the Radioecology Laboratory (REL) Head, the Research Scientist ensures the development and participation in international projects to better understand the role of
the oceans in carbon sequestration, as well as the organization and coordination of the Laboratory activities in the assessment of the carbon cycling in the oceans. Also, he/she contributes to REL studies applying nuclear techniques to understand coastal processes
and environmental changes and the biomonitoring of contaminants.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><b>KEY QUALIFICATIONS:</b><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Advanced university degree in oceanography, environmental sciences or a related science, with a strong background in marine sciences and radioactivity.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">At least 7 years of experience in the application of radiometric techniques to marine studies, including considerable experience in the use of natural radioisotopes to understand
the carbon and other biogeochemical cycles in the oceans.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">In-depth knowledge and experience in the field of biological and biogeochemistry oceanography including knowledge of sampling techniques at sea.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Thorough knowledge of strategies and methodologies for carbon flux studies in the oceans.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto"><b>POSITION EXPECTATIONS:</b><o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Support the Section Head in planning and implementing the programme in the specific area of carbon cycling, coastal processes and environmental changes, and the biomonitoring of
contaminants.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Develop, plan and execute research on the ocean carbon cycle, carbon export and vertical flux processes using classical and isotopic techniques.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Plan and organize field and laboratory activities to monitor and assess the carbon cycling in the oceans and the flux of contaminants and biomarkers associated to particles.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Develop and expand the use of natural radionuclides as a tool to study the sequestration of carbon by the oceans.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Prepare and write scientific reports and publications on the biogeochemical cycle of carbon and the export of carbon as well as of inorganic and organic elements in the ocean; represent
the IAEA-EL in meetings and at conferences.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Supervise, instruct and guide consultants, research assistants, technical assistants and trainees in the Laboratory and on research cruises.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto">Provide scientific and technical support to Technical Co-operation Projects, in particular to regional and inter-regional projects aiming to harmonize methodologies and strategies
in the area of marine environmental studies using nuclear and associated techniques.<o:p></o:p></p>
