Ph.D. Assistantship in Forests and Global Change
Virginia Tech
Department of Forest Resources and Environmental Conservation

Description
We are recruiting a motivated student for a new Ph.D. assistantship avail=
able to study the influence of global change on forest ecosystems. The pr=
oject objective is to=20
predict future forest dynamics and carbon cycling by integrating observat=
ions of forests (e.g., diameter measurements, remote sensing, drought exp=
eriments,=20
nutrient addition experiments, etc.) from diverse data sources into ecosy=
stem models. The Ph.D. research will involve the development of model-dat=
a fusion and=20
ecosystem modeling techniques, with opportunities to participate in field=
research at a new flux tower research site (sbc-lars.blog.sbc.edu). Stud=
ents are=20
encouraged to apply to be a fellow in Virginia Tech=92s Interfaces of Glo=
bal Change graduate program (globalchange.vt.edu) or Remote Sensing gradu=
ate program=20
(rsigep.frec.vt.edu), depending on their interests. We are especially int=
erested in recruiting students with previous ecological and computational=
training.

Qualifications
Applicants must have an undergraduate degree in either ecology, environme=
ntal science, forestry, statistics or closely related field; M.S. graduat=
es are preferred.=20
Previous experience with computer programing is required, with previous e=
xperience in forest ecosystems desired.

Please send statements of interest (including previous research experienc=
es and career goals), C.V., copies of transcripts and GRE scores, and con=
tact information=20
for at least three references to:
