analytical methods in order to determine the oxidation state of primary magmas
and constrain the current redox conditions in the Earth’s upper mantle. We will
use multiple oxybarometers that allow characterization of the oxidation of
state of primitive magmas and that require various analytical techniques such
as XANES at synchrotron facilities, Fe isotopes on MC-ICP-MS and in-situ
measurements of trace element concentrations by laser ICP-MS. This coupled
petrological and geochemical approach on natural samples requires the intensive
use of various instruments and potential necessary analytical developments, as
well as extensive modeling of magmatic processes.</span></div><div style="text-align: left; margin: 0cm 0cm 0.0001pt;" class=""><span lang="EN-US" class="">The PhD student will be supervised by 2 faculty
members: Muriel Laubier and </span><span lang="EN-US" class="">Nathalie
Bolfan-Casanova (LMV). The student will integrate the experimental petrology
team of Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans of Blaise Pascal University
(Clermont-Ferrand).</span></div><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><b class=""><i class=""><span lang="EN-US" class="">The host department:&nbsp;</span></i></b>The Laboratoire Magmas et Volcans is a large research center dedicated
to the study of magmatic and volcanic processes. It is a teaching and research
department of Blaise University that is affiliated to the french fundamental
research institutions CNRS (National center for scientific research) and IRD
(Research institute for development). It is also one of the two laboratories of
the <span style="background-color: white;" class="">Clermont Observatory of Terrestrial Physics
(OPGC). LMV hosts about one hundred faculty, administrative and staff members in
two locations: Blaise Pascal University (main site) and Jean Monnet University
(Saint-Etienne).</span></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: left;"><span lang="EN-US" style="color: rgb(30, 30, 30); background-color: white;" class="">LMV faculty,
fellows and students are engaged in research that helps answer fundamental
questions about magmatic, volcanic and early Earth processes. Areas of research
