<div dir="ltr">The Biogeochemical Laboratory in the Department of Marine, Earth, and
Atmospheric Sciences (MEAS) at North Carolina State University seeks a
full-time laboratory <span>manager</span>. The laboratory operates one
Thermo Delta V Plus stable isotope ratio mass spectrometer (IRMS) with
peripheral instruments (elemental analyzer, total organic carbon analyzer, gas
chromatograph) and will soon expand with the acquisition of a second IRMS with
additional peripheral instruments. Current funded projects that will utilize
this instrumentation include studies of carbon isotopes in dissolved and
particulate organic matter in a variety of aquatic ecosystems, including
surface waters of lakes, river, estuaries and seawater, and sedimentary pore
waters. Other projects involve measurement of organic nitrogen in coastal
waters and dissolved inorganic carbon dynamics in lakes and coastal waters. It
is anticipated that this position will catalyze the ability of the laboratory
to engage in other collaborative and contract work.
<div class="gmail_quote"><div dir="ltr"><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:5pt;text-align:justify;line-height:normal">The <span>laboratory manager</span> will be responsible for 1)
the operation of the IRMS instruments and their peripherals, 2) training and
overseeing students and postdocs to prepare samples and operate the
instruments, 3) maintenance and minor repairs of instruments and associated
equipment, 4) invoicing and ordering, 5) ensuring data quality, and 6) ensuring
the lab conforms to all health and safety regulations. The successful
applicant must be able to collaborate in the generation of external research
funding, lead training of laboratory users, and demonstrate laboratory
management, communication and organizational skills. This position does not
involve independent research projects. Limited travel may be required.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin-bottom:5pt;text-align:justify;line-height:normal">Salary will be commensurate with experience. Preference will be given
to candidates with a Bachelor’s degree in the earth or marine sciences or
closely related field and strong preference will be given toward candidates
with a graduate degree in the geosciences or chemistry. <b>Applicants must have experience in the operation and maintenance of
stable isotope instruments and peripherals.</b> This position is
time-limited for three years and continuation is contingent upon the
availability of funding and satisfactory performance. There is potential for
this to become a permanent position. Continued funding will be dependent upon
development of successful collaborative arrangements with NCSU faculty,
graduate students and outside users.</p>
