The Smithsonian Institution, the world&#39;s largest museum and research comple=<br>
x, offers several Postdoctoral Fellowships annually to outstanding early ca=<br>
reer scientists.  The Smithsonian&#39;s distinctive combination of field resear=<br>
ch facilities, museum archives, and expertise in ecology, biological conser=<br>
vation, systematics, and paleobiology provides opportunities for synthetic,=<br>
 big-picture insights into some of the most profound issues challenging our=<br>
 world today, including habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species.<br>

d conduct environmental research in temperate, tropical, and polar ecosyste=<br>
ms across the globe. Recent research has highlighted the separate and inter=<br>
active impacts of multiple global change factors on populations, communitie=<br>
s, and ecosystems, including climate change, biological invasions, biodiver=<br>
sity loss, nutrient loading, trace element pollution, and habitat alteratio=<br>
n.  Insights gained in these studies will be crucial to developing science-=<br>
based conservation plans that allow human societies to thrive while protect=<br>
ing our finite natural resources.<br>

Smithsonian Fellows receive an annual stipend of $48,000 plus health, reloc=<br>
ation, and research allowances.  Each position is expected to run for two y=<br>
ears, with the second year of funding contingent upon satisfactory progress=<br>
.  Applicants are encouraged to coordinate with a SERC scientist prior to s=<br>
ubmitting an application for this competitively-awarded fellowship.  Applic=<br>
