Center for Climate Systems Research (CCSR) in the
Earth Institute, Columbia University in New York
seeks applicants for an Associate Research Scientist
(ARS) appointment in the area of modeling dynamic
global vegetation and its effect on climate and the
carbon cycle in a three-dimensional general
circulation model (GCM). The appointment is for a 1
year period, subject to renewal.<span

The successful candidate will conduct research in
development of land surface and terrestrial
ecosystem process models, and collaborate with
scientists on evaluation of these processes with the
in-house GCM at the Goddard Institute for Space
Studies (GISS), the Goddard Space Flight Center,
Columbia University. The land ecosystem model
currently coupled to the GISS GCM is the Ent
Terrestrial Biosphere Model (Ent TBM), which
represents height-stratified and mixed-plant
functional type (PFT) communities. The ARS research
will initially involve developing representations of
prognostic vegetation and soil carbon allocation and
ecosystem dynamics in the Ent TBM. This work can
include but not be limited to: incorporation of
satellite data to constrain vegetation physiological
and allometric parameter sets; development and
comparison of representations of biogeochemical and
ecological dynamics, such as alternative PFT
representations, nitrogen cycling, phenology,
community dynamics, disturbance, and land cover/land
use change. The successful ARS candidate will be
qualified to lead grant proposals and develop
independent research on vegetation-atmosphere
interactions, as well as contribute to model
intercomparison studies of coupled climate-carbon
models as part of the scientific community. The
candidate will be expected to perform original
research, present the results of the research at
scientific meetings, and publish first-author papers
in peer-reviewed journals. </td>
