invite applications for the John J. and Katherine C. Ewel Fellowship
Program in Ecology and Environmental Science in the Tropics and
Subtropics. This program will enable a recent doctorate recipient to
study ecology and environmental sciences at the University of Florida
(UF). The Fellow will work for two years with a University of Florida
faculty member in any department to create new knowledge in any area of

<h3>The award</h3>
<p> The fellowship will provide an annual
stipend of $54,000 plus an annual allowance of $15,000 for health
insurance, research support, professional development, and travel. One
two year fellowship will be awarded to begin August 2016.</p>
<h3>Selection criteria</h3>
<ul><li>Applicant’s prior academic and professional success and his or her potential contribution to scholarship or practice</li><li>UF faculty member commitment, enthusiasm and
support for the proposed project and fellow, and the ability to provide
office space and a productive work environment.</li><li>UF PhD graduates are ineligible.</li><li>Must have filed their dissertation before starting their appointment in August 2016.</li><li>International doctoral students or recent PhD graduates are strongly encouraged to apply.</li></ul>
<h3>Finding a UF faculty sponsor</h3>
<p> Potential candidates should start now
to identify and establish a relationship with a University of Florida
faculty member to host his or her research. The UF faculty member will
be a mentor to the Fellow and will provide office space, lab space if
required, basic administrative support, and any additional research
support needed to meet the objectives of the proposal. Potential
candidates should search appropriate departments to identify a faculty
member with whom they wish to work.</p>
<p> Each applicant’s potential sponsor must submit a
letter of support (two pages maximum) to the selection committee
describing in detail the level of commitment to the research and the
candidate. A UF faculty member could support more than one candidate.
It is recommended that candidates search widely for a faculty sponsor
across the numerous programs and departments at the University of
Florida that conduct research on ecological and environmental issues.
This includes, but is not limited to, the departments of Biology and
Geography in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; departments and
schools in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences including
Wildlife Ecology and Conservation, Forest Resources and Conservation,
and Soil and Water Science; and interdisciplinary programs including
Tropical Conservation and Development. </p>
<h3>Program requirements</h3>
<ul><li>Candidates for the 2016 Ewel Fellowship should have received their terminal degree between May 2012 and August 2016. </li><li>Candidates with a doctorate or equivalent in any
field are eligible, and they may propose research projects in any
discipline related to ecology and the environment. All successful
candidates will be able to demonstrate experience performing scholarly
research.</li><li>Each candidate must secure a commitment letter from
one or more UF faculty to serve as a mentor and to provide office and
lab space for the two-year fellowship. The UF sponsor’s expertise
should provide a significant opportunity to broaden the candidate’s own
research expertise.</li><li>The University of Florida is an affirmative action,

any university in the world except the University of Florida. Foreign

doing research. The fellowship requires residency at UF for at least
half of the fellowship period, i.e., 12 months, not necessarily

<h3>Guidance on your proposal</h3>
<p> The project description
is your research and training plan and covers the research you will do
and the training you will receive during your fellowship. Include a
brief introduction, a statement of your research objectives, methods,
significance of your research, your training objectives, an explanation
of how the fellowship activities will enhance your career, and a
justification for the selection of your UF mentor. </p>
<h3>Guidance on the letter of support from your UF mentor</h3>
<p> The letter of support from the UF
mentor should include a brief description of the research projects s/he
is involved with and how your research and training plan would fit
into and benefit the ongoing research. A description of the role the
UF mentor will play in mentoring the fellowship recipient and in the
proposed research should also be included.</p>
