The Network for Sustainable Climate Risk Management (<a
href="http://scrimhub.org">SCRiM</a>) seeks outstanding candidates for a
postdoctoral research associate working in the area of <span
style="font-weight: bold;">Algorithms for Optimal and Robust Design
under Uncertainty for Climate Applications</span>.<br>
<span style="font-weight: bold;"><br>
</span>Centered at Penn State and linking 18 universities and five
research institutions in six nations, SCRiM addresses the question: <span
style="font-weight: bold; font-style: italic;">What
are sustainable, scientifically sound, technologically feasible,
economically efficient, and ethically defensible climate-risk management
strategies?</span> SCRiM catalyzes fundamental, mission-oriented, and
transdisciplinary research to characterize climate risks and trade-offs
associated with risk management instruments such as mitigation,
adaptation, and geoengineering. The network provides unique
opportunities for transdisciplinary research collaboration, education,
outreach, decision support, mentoring, and professional development.<br>
<br>
Potential projects for the successful candidate include (i) development
of models to inform optimal and robust climate mitigation and adaptation
strategies under uncertainty with learning, and (ii) development of
models and methods for analyzing the transition of the energy system to
meet multiple goals including low carbon emissions, low water usage, and
low air pollution, with a particular focus on the electric power sector
and detailed engineering optimization models. The ideal candidate will
have a strong quantitative background with expertise in at least one of
the following: operations research, power system modeling, optimal
control, energy economics, and/or integrated assessment modeling of
climate change. The candidate will have considerable freedom to
collaboratively design the research within the scope of the broad
questions outlined above. While housed with the SCRiM research group,
candidates would also have the opportunity to interact with overlapping
research communities and projects including the Center for Sustainable
Electric Power Systems, Institute for Natural Gas Research, and several
other interdisciplinary efforts ongoing at Penn State.<br>
<br>
This position is available immediately and will remain open until
filled. Initial appointment will be for a period of one year, with
excellent possibility of renewal for one or more additional years. The
salary will be competitive, commensurate with experience, and will
comply with Penn State University guidelines. Successful completion of a
background check is required prior to employment.<br>
