The Area of Excellence (AOE): Blue Gold, Mitigating Water Scarcity was es=<br>
tablished in 2015=20<br>
to address problems related to the availability and quality of fresh wate=<br>
r for a sustainable=20<br>
society. The AOE was awarded four new faculty lines in the School of Publ=<br>
ic Health (aquatic=20<br>
toxicology), College of Engineering (water supply engineering), College o=<br>
f Arts and Letters,=20<br>
and College of Sciences that will strengthen existing research in water a=<br>
t SDSU. The AOE is=20<br>
particularly interested in the ways in which people withdraw, consume, di=<br>
scharge, store, and=20<br>
release water to understand social, economic, and ecosystem implications.=<br>
The AOE will also=20<br>
focus on alternative water supply strategies and understanding links betw=<br>
een issues of=20<br>
energy and technology, human population, societal demand, and climate cha=<br>
nge.<br>

ablished in 2015 to=20<br>
foster communication between university faculty and regional and national=<br>

management agencies, and to develop interdisciplinary funded research on =<br>

science and management. WSI has members in Departments of Ecology, Geogr=<br>
aphy, Civil=20<br>
and Environmental Engineering, Political Science, and Public Health inves=<br>

resources, including but not limited to southern California and the US-Me=<br>
