The California Academy of Sciences is experiencing a period of significant change. We have recently adopted a new mission statement – to Explore, Explain and Sustain Life on Earth – and are looking to bolster the sustainability-themed content of our museum
floor, aquarium and planetarium shows, educational programs, public outreach efforts, media partnerships, and global engagement strategies.

Our sustainability efforts are focused on sustaining the diversity of life on earth, and the crucial services ecosystems provide to humanity. To us, sustainability
means preserving the fabric of life on earth, for ourselves and for future generations.

So we are seeking a Manager of Environmental Sustainability Education and Engagement who will help lead new sustainability-themed efforts at the California Academy of Sciences (the Academy). The Manager will:

Conduct high-level, synthetic research on the latest scientific, technological, engineering, economic, and policy landscape surrounding critical sustainability issues that are of interest
to the Academy. Initial topics will include the sustainability of our energy, food, and freshwater systems at the global scale, and how these relate to the health of ecosystems and biodiversity worldwide.

Based on the latest research, develop sustainability-themed education modules for new museum exhibits, public programs, and community outreach efforts based at the California Academy of Sciences.
These may include a wide variety of written and multi-media materials, as well as elements for exhibits, planetarium productions, aquarium displays, etc.

Develop sustainability “citizen action toolkits” for Academy guests, members, and the broader public of the Bay Area, to help them take steps towards achieving sustainability in their own
daily lives, whether at home, at school, or at work.

Share these educational modules and action toolkits with other museums, educational institutions, and non-profits across the world, to scale our sustainability solutions to the globe. A major
focus of this goal will be building new institutional partnerships and networks to take our work to larger scales.

This is a critical position for the California Academy of Sciences as it aims to be the world’s premiere sustainability-themed museum. We aim to be a respected sustainability education and engagement leader in the Bay Area, nationally, and across the world.

The responsibilities are broad and varied. The Manager will be responsible for doing high-quality synthetic research on critical sustainability issues, producing and developing innovative sustainability educational modules and action toolkits based on the
latest science, helping the Academy incorporate these into new exhibits and programs, and sharing them with other institutions around the world.
