<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:8.5pt;line-height:115%;font-family:Verdana;color:black">The Department of
Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks a Research
Associate to contribute to research on modeling the interactions and feedbacks
among land use, climate, ecosystem health and human well-being. Focusing at two
scales--global and regional, in east Africa--the research is funded by a UVA
Program of Distinction Grant and the MacArthur Foundation. The research
associate will work with Deborah Lawrence and an interdisciplinary team at UVA
in Charlottesville, Virginia, with travel to the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado and possible travel to Africa.
The broader research project aims to 1) evaluate the impact of global land
allocation among food, biofuels and forests on climate, 2) apply results from
the global analysis to the great lakes region of East Africa, 3) develop a
framework to assess the moral/ethical, socio-economic and ecological impacts of
climate regimes based on alternative land use allocations, and 4) determine the
economic, legal and political leverage points for pursuing particular
land-climate regimes. This research associate will focus mainly on climate
modeling (1,2) and ecological impacts (3), using the Community Land Model (CLM)
and the Community Earth System Model (CESM). <br>

The position requires a PhD in earth system science, environmental science,
terrestrial ecology, or a related field and a demonstrated record of research
and publication. The candidate must have experience with data analysis and
visualization (ideally, experience with Fortran and IDL/Matlab) and numerical
models. Candidates need strong knowledge of terrestrial ecosystems and
biosphere-atmosphere interactions, as well as knowledge of the physical and
ecological basis of land surface and biogeochemical models. In addition, strong
skills in verbal and written communication of scientific results, ability to
work both independently and collaboratively as a member of interdisciplinary
teams, and ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks are
critical skills. While expertise in climate modeling is not necessary, comfort
with, interest in and enthusiasm for working with computers is required. <br>
<br>
This position is funded for two and a half years. Appointment is for one year
with renewal, contingent upon satisfactory performance during annual reviews.
The completion of a Ph.D. in earth system sciences or related field is required
by anticipated appointment start date of October 25, 2015. <br>

To apply, complete a Candidate Profile through Jobs@UVa
(<a href="https://jobs.virginia.edu">https://jobs.virginia.edu</a>) and electronically attach the following: a cover
letter describing research experience, interests, and experience with
interdisciplinary teams, a curriculum vitae, and contact information for three
(3) references; search on posting number 0617021. Review of complete
applications will begin August 31, 2015; however, the position will remain open
until filled. <br>
