This position collects and analyzes weather and snow data to
create short-term spot weather forecasts to support the highway
avalanche forecasting program and to create backcountry
avalanche forecasts for public recreation; works with the
Colorado Department of Transportation's highway operations; and
supports rescue and avalanche safety groups. The
position develops tools to increase the efficiency and accuracy
of the forecasting program including modifying and maintaining
numerical weather and snow pack forecast models; developing
statistical tools (such as regression trees) to forecast snow
and weather phenomena; utilizing the CAIC database to create
expert systems and neural networks for forecast applications;
and developing web-based data visualization software for
numerical model output and observational data. The position
develops curricula and technical courses on weather and snow and
avalanche forecasting which range from the backcountry awareness
