                        College of the City University of New York

                        seeking a highly dynamic and professional
                        individual to serve as Postdoctoral Fellow and
                        Student Research Mentor for a position currently
                        funded for 1 year. <br>
                        <br>
                        The Mercury Laboratory has as its primary focus
                        the investigation of the kinetics and mechanism
                        of mercury reduction and transport in the
                        environment. The laboratory has contributed
                        significant advances in understanding the
                        biogeochemical cycle of mercury in soils; see

                        recent lab publications.<br>
                        <br>
                        Under the general supervision of the Senior
                        Scientist, the postdoctoral fellow will perform
                        simple-to-very-complex research, investigation,
                        and analytic activities. Performs many
                        activities independently, with varying degrees
                        of supervision depending on the scope and
                        complexity of the project, the assignment, or
                        the qualifications of the incumbent. Will mentor
                        undergraduate students on specific research
                        projects. Writes proposals and abstracts.
                        Recruits and interviews for laboratory
                        operations.<br>
                        <br>
                        DUTIES <br>
                        Performs research activities, records
                        observations, and interprets results, using
                        established protocols; assists with complex
                        activities; assists in gathering, providing, and
                        interpreting information for routine reports.
                        May be assigned substantial independent
                        responsibility for major or complex portions of
                        a research project. Provides professional
                        support to the Senior Scientist, including
                        drafting project reports, making presentations,
                        meeting with sponsors, and organizing
                        intellectual exchanges with other
                        researchers/scholars in person or via
                        telecommunications.<br>
                        • Trains new employees in routine processes; <br>
                        • Works with technical staff and other research
                        staff to coordinate projects; ensures the safe
                        operation of equipment and the effective
                        completion of assignments by following protocols
                        and accurately documenting research findings and
                        progress; <br>
                        • Consults with other researchers and
                        authorities in the field as appropriate; <br>
                        • Assists in planning meetings, conferences,
                        web-based communication etc.; Maintains
                        confidentiality as required by the project or as
                        directed by supervisors; <br>
                        • Assists in designing measures, sampling
                        techniques, and instruments to measure results;
                        follows protocols for gathering qualitative
                        and/or quantitative data, coding data or
                        information, constructing data bases using
                        specified technology, analyzing data,
                        maintaining data security, and archiving data as
                        needed; <br>
                        • Keeps accurate, well-organized records; <br>
                        • Performs the duties of lower level positions
                        as needed; performs other duties as assigned. <br>
                        <br>
                        CORE COMPETENCIES<br>
                        Intellectual strength in the area of mercury
                        transport, chemistry, and /or biogeochemistry as
                        evidenced by areas of study, teaching,
                        publication and/or research background;
                        knowledge of cutting-edge research in the field;
                        <br>
                        • Ability to comprehend and act on assignments
                        of varying complexity; <br>
                        • Ability to handle multiple assignments; <br>
                        • Ability to work on a team as well as
                        independently; <br>
                        • Ability to use effectively all research
                        equipment and devices standard to the field;
                        ability to use and manage web-based technology,
                        as needed. <br>
                        • Ability to troubleshoot analytical instruments
                        including, but not limited to, mercury
                        analyzers. <br>
                        • Ability to perform mechanical and software
                        setup and update of laboratory instruments and
                        devices. <br>
                        • Ability to operate in the computer/statistical
                        environment of the research project <br>
                        • Ability and experience authoring or
                        co-authoring reports and papers of substantial
                        complexity; when assigned, ability to organize
                        and participate in colloquia, symposia,
                        presentations of reports, demonstrations,
                        performances, etc. consistent with the scope and
                        nature of the project and the requirements of
                        the sponsor; <br>
                        • Ability to exercise intellectual leadership in
                        anticipating and resolving research issues; <br>
                        • Ability to supervise and mentor high school
                        students, undergraduate, graduate, and
                        laboratory personnel. <br>
                        • Ability to communicate effectively with and
                        convey complex concepts, intricate processes,
                        and sophisticated statistical findings to other
                        researchers, supervisors, students, sponsors,
                        administrators, and, when appropriate, the
                        public; ability to listen and respond to the
                        concerns/ideas of others; <br>
                        • Knowledge of protocols for safe conduct of
                        research, including but not limited to the
                        handling of toxic substances, the study of human
                        subjects, and establishment of safety reporting
                        procedures. <br>
                        <br>
                        QUALIFICATIONS<br>
                        An earned Ph.D. in an appropriate field of study
                        from an accredited institution; and a record of
                        research, publications, and scholarship in a
                        related field. Intellectual strength and
                        experience as evidenced in progressively
                        responsible research experience, publications in
                        the field, and/or other accomplishments (e.g.
                        significant participation in important
                        inventions, artistic endeavors, etc.). <br>
                        <br>
                        COMPENSATION &amp; BENEFITS<br>
                        Salary is commensurate with experience and
                        qualifications, but expected to be in the range
                        of $38,000-42,000. RFCUNY offers a comprehensive
                        benefits package to employees and eligible
                        dependents based on job title and
                        classification. Employees are also offered a
                        pension.<br>
