<p>In coordination with the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (<span class="caps">NOAA</span>),
the Cooperative Institute for Research in the Atmosphere
(<span class="caps">CIRA</span>) at Colorado State
University (<span class="caps">CSU</span>) is accepting
applications to a Visiting Scientist Program (<span
class="caps">VSP</span>) to support the activities of
the Joint Center for Satellite Data Assimilation (<span
class="caps">JCSDA</span>). The<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">VSP</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>seeks to
stimulate collaboration and idea exchange between
science partners for the purpose of
advancing/accelerating the use of satellite observations
in weather, climate and environmental analysis and
prediction. A wide range of research topics fall under
the umbrella of this<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">VSP</span>, and applicants are encouraged
to propose ideas that resonate with the understood
challenges and current research fronts of satellite data
assimilation. These topics include but are not limited
to:<br>
• Radiance assimilation techniques within operational
systems and reanalysis, including all-sky
(cloudy/precipitating) observations and over all surface
types.<br>
• Satellite data assimilation from passive and active,
microwave, infrared and visible sensors (such as<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">SNPP</span>/<span class="caps">ATMS</span>,
CrIS,<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">VIIRS</span>,<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">OMPS</span>, scatterometers,<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">GCOM</span>-W<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">AMSR</span>-2,<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">GPM</span>,<span class="caps">SMAP</span>,
Himawari, etc<br>
• Satellite data assimilation from both polar and
geostationary sensors with applications in both global
and regional models<br>
• Readiness for the assimilation of future sensors such
as<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">GOES</span>-R,<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">JPSS</span>,<span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">COSMIC</span>-2,<span class="caps">RAPIDSCAT</span>,
etc.<br>
• Improvements to the accuracy, efficiency, scalability
and error characterization of radiative transfer models.<br>
• Improved surface radiation schemes, including
high-resolution representation of surface emissivity and
bidirectional reflectance distribution.<br>
• Microwave and infrared imager data quality control,
pre-processing, and observational error
characterization.<br>
• Assimilation of new data (not currently assimilated)
with a potential to improve analysis accuracy and
forecast skills.<br>
• Satellite data sampling and thinning techniques,
observational operator improvements<br>
• Design of Observing System Experiments and Observing
System Simulation Experiments for current/future sensor
impact studies.</p>
<p>Selected candidate(s) will interact closely with a team
of scientists at the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
class="caps">NOAA</span><span
class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>Center for
Weather and Climate Prediction in College Park, MD to
advance satellite data assimilation techniques.</p>
<p>Eligibility:<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><br>
Appointments will be made to Ph.D.-level scholars and
university faculty planning sabbatical leave.
Applications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis
and preference will be given to candidates who have
