For those interested in part-time teaching at St. Olaf next year, see information below:

The department of environmental studies at St. Olaf is looking for
qualified individuals to teach two courses next year in earth sciences.

In the fall, we need someone to teach our intro-to-earth-science course,
ES 123, Earth's Dynamic Systems. Its course description reads: This
course considers a variety of topics in earth and environmental science.
Beginning with the origin of the earth and planetary system, the course
examines crustal evolution and plate tectonics, geologic resources and
hazards, and the relationship of these surface phenomena to processes
occurring in the earth's interior. It concludes with a study of the
oceans, the atmosphere, the earth's climate system, and environmental
change. Prerequisite: proficiency in algebra and geometry. Offered
annually. Counts toward environmental studies major (all tracks) and
concentration. The class is currently scheduled to meet on Tuesdays
from 11:45 to 1:10 and Thursdays from 12:45 to 2:05.

In the spring, we need someone to teach an intermediate course on
climate change, ES 245: Global Climate Change. Its course description
reads: This course is an interdisciplinary seminar on climate throughout
the earth's history, including recent changes caused by humankind. It
examines the climate system in the larger framework of planetary
evolution and explores evidence from the geologic record for climates of
the past. Using current scientific literature, students investigate
causes of climate change and consider scenarios for future climate based
on models incorporating alternative global development strategies.
Prerequisites: sophomore standing; one level I biology, chemistry, or
physics course or ENVST 137 strongly encouraged. Offered annually. This
class is scheduled to meet on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 12:55 to 1:50.

In both cases, we have sufficient lead time to change the class meeting
time if it helps us hire a qualified and interested individual.

If your department has any part-time faculty who are interested in
taking on some additional courses, or if you know of any geologists who
might be interested in teaching here at St. Olaf, I would very much
appreciate it if you could send this note on to them, encouraging them
to call me or write at their earliest convenience.

Rebecca P. Judge

judge@stolaf.edu
