Aquatic Geochemistry Laboratory in the Department of Earth and
Environmental Sciences at the University of Michigan requires a research
lab technician to conduct research and oversee lab operations. This
position involves laboratory and field work as well as data analysis in
Microsoft, SAS, and Matlab.</span></font></p><h2><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Responsibilities*</span></font></h2><p><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Collect and analyze water and soil samples for biogeochemical studies including field work in remote areas. <br></span></font>
<font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><br>
Analyze water samples including chemical, photochemical and biological
characterization, followed by entry of data into a computer database. <br></span></font>
<font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><br>
Maintain laboratory records (notebooks and protocols).<br></span></font>
<font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><br>
Supervise undergraduate students analyzing water samples.</span></font></p><h2><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Required Qualifications*</span></font></h2><p><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">A
suitable candidate should possess a Bachelor's degree in a natural
science discipline such as chemistry, biology, geology or environmental
sciences. Must be able to effectively translate, adapt and apply this
knowledge. Must show evidence of skill in data entry (i.e., Microsoft
excel) and analysis including basic statistics. <br></span></font>
<font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif"><br>
This position requires moderately strenuous field work in the Arctic
(hiking with full packs over tundra) and in occasionally inclement
weather. This position requires 10-12 weeks during the summer to be
spent in Alaska at a remote field site.</span></font></p><h2><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Desired Qualifications*</span></font></h2><p><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">General
research fieldwork experience. Experience collecting water samples
along with a demonstrated ability to analyze trace constituents in these
samples. Experience using the following instruments, analyses, or
software: UV-vis spectrophotometer, fluorometer, HPLC, mass
spectrometry, ICP, analysis of aquatic FDOM, TOC, DIC, oxygen,
nutrients, trace metals, Matlab.</span></font></p><h2><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Work Schedule</span></font></h2><p><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Summer field work in Alaska will be performed Monday-Saturday; 40-60 hours per week.<br>
Ann Arbor lab work will usually be performed between 8-5, Monday - Friday for 20-40 hours per week.</span></font></p><h2><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Additional Information</span></font></h2><p><font><span style="font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif">Compensation
will be in the range of $10-$15 per hour, commensurate with
qualifications. This posting is for a University of MIchigan temporary
employee position. Temporary employment may be full or part-time, but in
either case, is limited in duration. This position is considered
