            <p>The<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
                class="caps">USDA</span><span
                class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>UV-B Monitoring
              and Research Program (<span class="caps">UVMRP</span>) at
              the Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory, Colorado State
              University seeks a full-time Research Scientist I. The
              successful applicant will join a team of engineers,
              programmers and scientists and conduct research related to
              the levels of solar UV irradiance reaching the Earth’s
              surface. This position is supported by a<span
                class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="caps">USDA</span><span
                class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>grant that funds
              the<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
                class="caps">UVMRP</span><span
                class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>and operation of a
              UV and visible radiation monitoring network that collects
              direct, diffuse and total solar radiation at 40 locations
              in the US, Canada and New Zealand.</p>
            <p>This long-term program has been running for over 20
              years. Funding of the position is dependent upon continued
              federal support that is renewed on an annual basis. The
              position will be filled at the RS-I level with a salary in
              the range of $50,000 to $63,000 per year with benefits.
              Start date will be as soon as practical upon selection of
              a candidate.</p>

            <p>The successful candidate must have earned a Ph.D. degree
              in Atmospheric Science, Applied Physics, Mathematics or a
              related discipline with expertise in the transfer of solar
              radiation in the atmosphere and/or the remote sensing of
              atmospheric parameters influencing the amount of solar
              radiation reaching the Earth’s surface. An applicant with
              an MS and at least five years of experience as part of a
              research team with a demonstrated record of research in
              the relevant areas will also be considered. Proficiency in
              one or more of the common programming languages such as<span
                class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="caps">FORTRAN</span>,
              C, C++,<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span
                class="caps">IDL</span>, or<span
                class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><span class="caps">MATLAB</span><span
                class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>is required.</p>

            <p>The applicant should understand important processes
              affecting the transfer of solar radiation in the
              atmosphere although previous work in the UV portion of the
              spectrum is not required. A familiarity with radiation
              transport models is desirable as well as a basic
              understanding of the role of radiation in climate change
              scenarios. A background that includes the inference of
              surface solar irradiance from satellite observations is
              preferred as well as familiarity with the measurement of
              surface solar radiation. Understanding of model
              validation, data assimilation, relational data bases, and
              system analyses; as well as familiarity with radiation
              detectors and excellent written communication skills are
              desired.</p>
