The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management in the<br>
College of Natural Resources at the University of California, Berkeley<br>
invites applications for a position at the assistant, associate, or full<br>
professor level in Wildland Watershed Hydrology with an expected start date<br>
of July 1, 2015. This is an open rank search. Appointments at Associate and<br>
Full Professor would carry tenure; an appointment as Assistant Professor<br>
would be tenure-track.<br>

The Department of Environmental Science, Policy, and Management is a<br>
community of scholars from the biological, physical, and social sciences who<br>
endeavor to understand and sustain the ecosystems of the world. Our approach<br>
is by necessity interdisciplinary given the complexity of the questions we<br>
ask and the problems we confront. We are home to a top-ranked graduate<br>
program in environmental science and a vibrant mix of undergraduate majors.<br>
The Department maintains close relationships with the faculty of allied<br>
departments on campus and with environmental scientists at the Lawrence<br>
Berkeley National Lab. Our leading program in the environmental sciences will<br>
provide the successful candidate with outstanding opportunities for<br>
intellectual and professional achievement.<br>

The successful recruit is expected to develop/maintain a nationally<br>
recognized research program in landscape-scale watershed hydrology related to<br>
the fields of climatology, biogeochemistry, environmental engineering, forest<br>
ecology and management, ecohydrology, and/or geomorphology. Potential areas<br>
of research could include: understanding the effects of changing climate,<br>
land use, and management practices on the hydrologic cycle and water storage<br>
capacity, stream habitat quality, and erosion and mass wasting processes;<br>
landscape scale hydrologic monitoring; developing institutional systems to<br>
secure delivery of watershed services. This position provides a focal point<br>
for the diverse faculty at Berkeley with expertise and interests in<br>
terrestrial ecology, hydrology, geomorphology, and freshwater ecology, as<br>
well as policy and management. Not only would there be links to faculty in<br>
the Department but also to faculty in allied departments on the Berkeley<br>
campus including the Departments of Agricultural and Resource Economics,<br>
Earth and Planetary Sciences, Landscape Architecture and Environmental<br>
Planning, Integrative Biology, and Civil and Environmental Engineering.<br>
Watershed processes, including water yield, water quality, and riparian<br>
ecology are some of the highest priority areas in state and national forest<br>
policies. Opportunities to develop a strong scientific underpinning for<br>
watershed science and water resource management more generally would have<br>
tremendous service opportunities within California.<br>

Applicants must have or be working toward a Ph.D. degree in an appropriate<br>
field, such as, hydrology, water science, civil and environmental<br>
engineering, forestry, landscape ecology, or a related field. Candidates<br>
applying at the tenure-track level must have completed all degree<br>
requirements for the Ph.D. or equivalent degree with the exception of<br>
dissertation at the time of application. For all applicants, the Ph.D. or<br>
equivalent degree is required by the start date. To be considered at the Full<br>
Professor level, applicants must have tenure or its equivalent by the start<br>
date. Tenure-track applicants are expected to have demonstrated outstanding<br>
research potential; candidates applying at the tenure level should have<br>
well-established outstanding research accomplishments. Additional<br>
qualifications for all applicants include evidence of outstanding scholarship<br>
within a relevant discipline, a dedication to excellence in teaching at the<br>
undergraduate and graduate level, and a commitment to working in an inclusive<br>
environment. A preferred qualification is potential for/evidence of<br>
leadership in the field.<br>

Serious consideration will be given to the candidate’s potential for<br>
success in mentoring Ph.D. students, the candidate’s record in teaching at<br>
both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and evidence of effective<br>
leadership. Professional service, including issues of access to and diversity<br>
in higher education and the academic profession will also be considered. The<br>
successful applicant will be responsible for teaching undergraduate and<br>
graduate courses in wildland hydrology as well as participation at the UC<br>
