<p style="margin-left:0.5in">MARYLAND, BALTIMORE 21250. University of Maryland,
Baltimore County. <strong><span style="font-family:"Times","serif"">Assistant Professor</span></strong>, beginning in August
2015. Ph.D. in Geography or related field required at time of appointment. The
UMBC Department of Geography & Environmental Systems seeks applicants who
use advanced geospatial and remote sensing techniques in order to pursue a
research agenda in environmental science or human-environment
interactions. Research and teaching interests may include remote sensing,
geospatial analysis, advanced spatial-temporal modeling and geovisualization of
environmental change, geocomputation, or geoinformatics applied within the
applicant’s disciplinary specialty to address environmental or societal
challenges. Teaching responsibilities include introductory GIS and remote
sensing along with upper level courses in the applicant’s area of
specialization. Candidates are expected to have an active program of
research and publication, ability to attract external funding, and evidence of
commitment to excellence in teaching (the standard teaching load is two courses
per semester). We have 300+ majors and 70 graduate students in our M.S.,
M.P.S, and PhD programs. The student body at UMBC is extremely diverse and we
are particularly interested in diversifying our faculty. </p>
<p style="margin-left:0.5in">In the most recent Carnegie ranking, UMBC is listed
as a Research University-High Research Activity. Research opportunities at UMBC
include collaboration with colleagues in the Public Policy graduate program,
one of the largest in the country; with the <a href="http://www.beslter.org/">Baltimore
Ecosystem Study (BES)</a>, an NSF-funded Urban Long-Term Ecological Research
site headquartered at UMBC; the <a href="http://www.jcet.umbc.edu/">Joint
Center for Earth Systems Technology (JCET)</a> a research consortia formed by
UMBC and NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center; the <a href="http://www.umbc.edu/cuere">Center for Urban Environmental Research and
Education (CUERE)</a>, an EPA and NOAA-funded center focused on the environmental,
social and economic impacts of urban and suburban landscape transformation, and
the <a href="http://md.water.usgs.gov/">U.S. Geological Survey Water Science
Center</a> for the MD-DE-DC region. In addition UMBC is a partner in the
Chesapeake Watershed Cooperative Ecosystem Studies Unit (CESU), part of a
national CESU network. The campus is located in close proximity to
Washington D.C. and a broad array of federal, state, and local agencies as well
as to other research institutions along the Washington-Baltimore-Philadelphia
corridor. The Washington-Baltimore region has an extraordinary number of
agencies and institutions whose focus is on the environment, natural resources,
and environmental policy, in national as well as international contexts. Interested
