The Department of Earth Sciences is one of the larger departments within the Faculty of Science with approximately 90 employees and about 500 students. The Department educates geographers, physical geographers, geologists and oceanographers who can fill the growing need for geoscientists in society. Research in the department falls in three broad profile areas: Geology, Physical Geography and Marine Environment. We have strong teaching programs up to the Masters level in Earth Science, Marine Science and Geography, as well as research programs in several earth science disciplines. We have good infrastructure, IT resources, laboratories and instruments for mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics, dendrochronology and isotope analysis.

A track record of scientific expertise in the geochemistry of igneous and metamorphic rocks is required. This should principally be documented by publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals. The documented ability to obtain research grants from research councils and other external research financiers is the next most important criterion. After that comes teaching expertise, in particular geochemistry and mineralogy/petrology. Teaching expertise should be documented in terms of the amount of teaching done as well as experience in planning, organising and leading courses as well as supervising doctoral students.

Other competence fields which will be taken into account are: thermodynamic modelling, isotope geology, experimental petrology, field mapping, economic geology, crustal evolution, collaboration with industry and state agencies, and ability to collaborate and participate in networks.

This permanent appointment will be made following a holistic evaluation of expertise in the specified fields as well as an assessment of each candidate’s potential to carry out the specified tasks, collaborate with the existing staff and contribute to the development of the subject.
