Department of Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia (UVA) seeks
a Postdoctoral Research Associate to contribute to a project on modeling the
interactions and feedbacks among land use, climate, ecosystem health and human
well-being. The post-doctoral Research Associate will work with Deborah
Lawrence and an interdisciplinary team at UVA in Charlottesville, Virginia, with
travel to the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder,
Colorado. The research aims to 1) evaluate the impact of global land allocation
among food, biofuels and forests on climate, 2) develop a framework to assess
the moral/ethical, socio-economic and ecological impacts of climate regimes
based on alternative land use allocations, and 3) determine the economic, legal
and political leverage points for pursuing particular land-climate regimes. The
post-doctoral Research Associate will focus mainly on climate modeling, using
the Community Land Model (CLM) and the Community Earth System Model (CESM). <o:p></o:p></span></p>

ideal candidate has a PhD in earth system science, environmental science,
terrestrial ecology, or a related field and a demonstrated record of research
in areas relevant to this position. The candidate should also have experience
with data analysis and visualization (ideally, experience with Fortran and

basis of land surface and biogeochemical models. In addition, strong skills in
verbal and written communication of scientific results, ability to work both
independently and collaboratively as a member of interdisciplinary teams, and
ability to organize, prioritize, and coordinate multiple tasks are critical
skills. While expertise in climate modeling is not necessary, comfort with,
