The Hawai'i Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) within the School of Ocean
and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at the University of Hawai'i at
Manoa, invites applications for a full-time, 11-month, tenure-track
faculty *position
0086036 in Theoretical Ecology or Evolution* at the rank of Assistant
Researcher (Professor).

*Duties and Responsibilities:*

We invite applicants with a vision for integrative and collaborative
research and strong mathematical, statistical and computational modelling
skills. The successful candidate will be an enthusiastic collaborator with
the ability to enhance a broad range of field- and lab-based projects at
HIMB. The candidate will work across taxa, spatial & temporal scales, and
coupled natural-human systems using existing or novel quantitative
approaches. The ideal candidate will have a field component of their own
research program and/or a vision for expanding their program by
collaborating with HIMB faculty on field-based research.

Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, population and community
dynamics, ecosystem processes, behavior, physiology, population genetics,
fisheries, and biogeography.

The position is 75% research and 25% instruction, and the successful
candidate will develop an extramurally funded research program that
complements the expertise of our existing faculty, mentor graduate
students, and contribute to instructional initiatives at HIMB and the
Marine Biology Graduate Program. The position is a full-time 11-month
appointment with nine months of state support and the expectation that the
candidate raises the remaining two months in extramural support.

The instructional component of the position should be viewed broadly and
creatively; we encourage integrative and transformative contributions that
expand the educational role of HIMB and leverage its exceptional setting
and resources.

Individual qualifications, academic excellence, and collegiality, rather
than specific research area, will be the primary criteria in selecting the
successful candidate.

*Minimum Qualifications:*

   1. Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree from a college or university of
recognized standing in biology, oceanography, zoology, ecology,
mathematical biology, statistics, bioinformatics, or related discipline.
Strong preference will be given to candidates with productive postdoctoral
   training.
   2. Demonstrated capability for creative, high-quality research and
   teaching.
   3. Evidence of scholarly achievement, including publication of doctoral
and postdoctoral research in quality journals in their field.
   4. Strong history of collaborative research.
   5. Successful instructional activities and demonstrated experience as a
   mentor.
   6. Ability to work and communicate effectively across disciplines.

*Desirable Qualifications:*

   1. Vision for research at HIMB that takes advantage of HIMB's unique
location, natural and community resources, and faculty expertise.
   2. Demonstrated ability to secure extramural funding from a range of
   sponsors.
   3. Experience leading or participating in local, national or
international research, education or outreach activities.
   4. Interest in applying their research outcomes to issues of local,
   regional, and global importance.

*Location:*

HIMB's principal facilities and operations are located on Moku o Lo'e
Island (Coconut Island) surrounded by a coral reef in Kane'ohe Bay on the
windward side of the island of O'ahu, about 24 km from the main university
campus in Manoa. The general research, education, and service program at
HIMB currently encompasses basic and applied aspects of tropical marine
biology, coral reef ecology, and marine science education and includes
areas of emphasis in: 1) physiological, behavioral, microbial, and
conservation ecology, particularly of coral reef and estuarine systems; 2)
population genomics, evolution, and biogeography; 3) fisheries; 4)
population-, spatial- and behavioral ecology of marine megafauna; and 5)
K-20 marine education and community outreach. HIMB is also the site of the
new He'eia National Estuarine Research Reserve, which aims to evaluate the
ecosystem services affected by traditional versus contemporary management
practices. Facilities include a confocal microscope, molecular core
facility, running seawater system, open circuit SCUBA and closed circuit
rebreather capacity, a small fleet of research boats, dorms and classrooms
for short courses and meetings, an education center and teaching
laboratory. The Institute is in the process of over $40 million in
renovations of its facilities to accommodate growing research and education
programs. SOEST is the largest school within the University of Hawai'i
System. The University of Hawai'i at Manoa is a land-, sea-, and
space-grant institution with an enrollment of approximately 20,000 graduate
and undergraduate students. HIMB employs approximately 70 individuals
including 20 research faculty. In addition, faculty from other University
of Hawai'i departments are affiliated with HIMB, and HIMB hosts adjunct
faculty from other institutions, scientists from federal agencies, and
visiting scientists from around the world.

Review of applications will begin on or about April 30, 2019.
