Responsibilities


As an Ecologist within the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center, some of
your specific duties will include:

o   Plans, conducts, and reports on results of studies on aquatic ecology,
population genomics, quantitative ecology, and ecodrought. Writes
comprehensive reports on those studies. 

o   Conducts project analyses and reviews results of studies or
investigations. 

o   Carries out investigations of ecological, fishery, and/or wildlife
conservation, preservation, and propagation issues.

o   Writes reports and/or manuscripts that include recommendations for major
changes, elimination, or improvement of operations and program plans.

o   Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

Office work is mostly sedentary. There will be lengthy periods of time
working at computer terminals. Fieldwork and laboratory work is physically
active and includes walking, bending, climbing, and lifting and carrying
equipment in diverse weather conditions. 

Work is performed in an office, laboratory, hatchery, and out in the field.
Some travel is necessary and during field trips, the employee may be exposed
to inclement weather, biting insects, and other natural hazards such as
mountainous terrain, storms, and dangerous wildlife.

required.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

o   Because this position requires travel for official business, the
selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days
of appointment.  Individuals who have delinquent account balances from a
previous Government charge card will be required to satisfy their existing
obligation before a new card can be issued.

o   A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued
employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a
background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to
successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

o   Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal
expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.

o   You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in

Qualifications


BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A below to satisfy the
basic education requirement for Ecologist, at all grade levels.

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited
college or university leading to a bachelor's degree or higher degree in
biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that
included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied
biological sciences. These hours must have included 9 semester hours or the
equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical
and mathematical sciences. 

In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants
must meet the following to qualify for the GS-12 level:

One year of appropriate specialized experience that is in ecology, biology,
or a related field of science underlying ecological research is qualifying
if it is equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service, and
if it equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to
perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. 

Examples of GS-11 level work may include: 1) design, plan, and execute
comprehensive biological and ecological studies, including publishing study
findings; 2) conduct experimental design, statistical analyses, modeling,
and biometrics relative to fisheries and aquatic ecology; 3) independently
plan and conduct comprehensive broad scale biological studies/investigations
on fishery resources and requests for proposals with the overall intent to
understand climate change impacts and other stressors on fish populations
and their habitats; 4) develop, maintain, and integrate multiple geospatial
and biological databases and conduct statistical and geospatial analyses,
including generating maps and imagery; 5) design and management of projects
and/or studies to provide an understanding of the effects of environmental
stressors in study areas; and 6) perform data processing, programming, and
statistical analysis in the R statistical language.

You must meet all qualification and eligibility requirements for the
position by the closing date of the announcement.


Education


o   Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer
work done through National Service programs (e.g. Peace Corps, AmeriCorps)
and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious;
spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical
competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and
experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive
credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

o   Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United
States may be used to meet the above requirements. You must provide
acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that
received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. For
