Climate & Health Equity Fellow
Job LocationsUS-DC-Washington
Overview

The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is the nation's most effective environmental action organization. We use law, science and the support of 3.1 million members and online activists to protect the planet's wildlife and wild places and to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all living things. NRDC was founded in 1970 and our staff helped write some of America's bedrock environmental laws, including the Clean Water Act, and many of the implementing regulations; our water enforcement cases played a major role shaping current water policy throughout the country. Today, our staff of more than 500 lawyers, scientists, economists, policy and communications experts, and others, work out of offices in New York, Washington, Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Bozeman, Montana and Beijing.

Position Summary:

NRDC is seeking a Climate & Health Equity Fellow to work with the SPARCC team in our Washington, DC office.

The SPARCC project is a three-year, multi-region initiative that seeks to change the systems that shape the built environment and create climate-smart, opportunity-rich places that allow marginalized communities - particularly low-income people and communities of color - to work, play, and thrive. The project is a collaboration between four intervening partners - NRDC, the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco, Low Income Investment Fund, and Enterprise Community Partners - and uses a model of regionally-based collaborative tables to improve regional equity. SPARCC uses the three core lenses of racial equity, health, and climate working together with regional partners to identify one or two major systems changes that will permanently alter the physical form of specific sites in the region and shift the mechanisms by which the built environment is shaped.

The role is a paid 10-week internship beginning in May 2019.

Responsibilities
* Advance national and local parks and urban space equity, tenant's rights and infrastructure portfolio in SPARCC
* Explore environmental gentrification policy solutions
* Develop resources that demonstrate how climate is shaping the conditions and impacts of displacement in communities and present case examples and creative solutions.
* Other programmatic tasks and activities as priorities arise.
Qualifications
* Strong research, writing and analysis skills. Ability to translate difficult concepts into relatable language.
* Knowledge of various softwares (e.g., Excel, Access), and design (e.g., Illustrator, Photoshop)
* Knowledge and/or interest in climate change, urban planning, environmental and land use law, environmental health/public health, geography, environmental studies, community development, public policy and other related fields
* Commitment to advancing social and environmental justice
* Interest in community organizing and use of storytelling a plus
* Ability to work independently and manage time efficiently
