Postdoctoral Position in Regional Climate Modeling

The UCLA Center for Climate Science is soliciting applications for a
postdoctoral researcher with expertise in regional atmospheric modeling to
join a new and high-impact project on the future of wildfire in California.
The successful candidate will design and execute regional climate modeling
simulations with the WRF model.

Supervised by Prof. Alex Hall, this position also offers exciting
opportunities to closely collaborate with physical and social scientists
across multiple academic and governmental climate research institutions. The
candidate will also have the ability to engage with stakeholders involved in
wildfire management across California, along with unique opportunities to
present their work to regional policymakers and the media. The position also
offers a chance for the candidate to mentor junior researchers and provide
leadership on overall modeling activities for the Center.

The position will initially be a 1-year appointment, renewable for an
additional one or more years given satisfactory performance and funding
availability.

Requirements for this position include:

● PhD in Atmospheric Sciences or related field, ideally conferred by July
1, 2019

● Experience running the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) model or a
comparable model for dynamical downscaling purposes

● Experience running WRF or a comparable model on high-performance
computing systems (e.g., Cheyenne, XSEDE, NERSC) and comfort working in
Linux environments

● Strong programming and data analytical skills for climate information (e.
g., Python, CDO,NCO)

● Demonstrated record of publishing scientific papers on regional
atmospheric or climate modeling, climate extremes, wildfire, hydrology, or
related topics

● Excellent written and oral communication skills

● Creative problem-solving skills and desire to work on cross-disciplinary
climate science topics

Benefits of joining the UCLA Center for Climate Science:

● Producing knowledge and products that are critical to climate adaptation
in California

● Travel support to present your research at scientific conferences

● Science communication training and ability to engage with high-visibility
media outlets

● Collaborating with a diverse and inclusive team of researchers
