[ES_JOBS_NET] call for postdoc in Extreme Event Attribution + (optional) IPCC Chapter Scientist

The *Center for Climate and Resilience Research*(CR2, http://www.cr2.cl/)
is a centre of excellence created in 2013 with funding from the National
Commission for Scientific and Technological Research (CONICYT). CR2 is the
point of convergence of researchers across disciplines jointly addressing
the understanding of the Earth System in a changing climate and contribute
to the evaluation and design of mitigation and adaptation measures in order
to strengthen climate resilience in Chile.

CR2 is involved in an interdisciplinary research project seeking to assess
the main drivers, impacts, responses and trends of short-term,
meteorological extreme events under climate change and variability in
central and south-central Chile. Chiefly among these events are heat waves
(leading to major forest fires) and extreme winter storms (leading to urban
and rural flooding). As part of this project, CR2 is looking for a
Postdoctoral fellow to work in the emerging field of extreme event
attribution. The goal is to design, carry out and diagnose event
attribution experiments with the weather at home modelling system, developed
by the University of Oxford (
https://www.climateprediction.net/weatherathome/). As this project is a
collaboration with the University of Oxford, the selected candidate will
spend a couple of weeks at Oxford to learn how to setup and run the
experiments.

In addition, this postdoc may spend a 1/4 of its time fulfilling duties as
Chapter Scientist for Chapter 1 (Context and Framing) for the forthcoming
Working Group 1 contribution to the IPCCs 6 Assessment Report (see separate
document for term of reference for those duties).

*Assessment criteria*:

The candidate must have strong research interests with demonstrable
expertise in the development of and experimentation with general
circulation models and very good programming skills in high level
languages. Applicants may come from a range of backgrounds including, geo
sciences, engineering, physics and mathematics. Additional factors that
will favourably influence selection include:

   - Interest and ability to work in a research team with a range of
   scientific disciplines.
   - Capability to interact with the international science community.
   - Strong verbal and written communication skills preferably in English.
   - Experience of publishing in scientific journals is also important.

*Terms of employment:* The position involves full-time employment for a
maximum of two years. In addition, there is the possibility to spent 1/4 of
the time as Chapter Scientist for Chapter 1 of the forthcoming IPCC
6th Assessment
Report (see separate document).

The position will be held at the Geophysics Department of the Faculty of
Physical and Mathematical Sciences of the University of Chile (
http://ingenieria.uchile.cl).

The salary will be 1,750,000 Chilean pesos (approximately 2600 USD per
