Description
ESA is seeking a summer intern for one of our Los Angeles region offices (Los Angeles, Pasadena, or Santa Monica) within ESA's Air Quality, Climate Change, and Noise group. The Air Quality and Climate Change staff provides a full range of air quality assessments, including greenhouse gas (GHG) calculations, carbon footprint analyses, and health risk assessments related to airborne pollutants. The Noise staff characterizes existing and projected noise conditions, as well as potential noise- and vibration- related nuisance and health issues. Internship positions at ESA provide an opportunity to gain real-world experience in environmental consulting in a fast-paced, professional setting. The internship is focused on supporting air quality, GHG, and noise analyses in preparation of California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documents by conducting research on the latest environmental laws and regulations, report writing, and contributing to technical analyses.

The internship provides an opportunity to work with emissions databases, such as the California Air Resources Board's EMission FACtors model (EMFAC2017), learn programs used to generate air quality and GHG analyses, such as the California Emissions Estimator Model (CalEEMod), and participate in ambient noise measurement sampling. Interns would also be introduced to air dispersion modeling, a critical component of ESA's health risk assessments. ESA prepares air quality, GHG, and noise analyses for a wide range (i.e., small to large) of CEQA/NEPA and environmental projects with both private and public clients. Project types include urban infill and high-rise development, professional sports arenas, campus projects (including hospitals and studios), transportation, and planning/resiliency. The internship would provide ESA an opportunity to mentor a candidate who is eager to learn more about the methods and practices of the environmental consulting industry.
