Department Overview

The PG&E Geosciences Department is an internal, high-end, consultancy group of engineers, geologists, geophysicists and seismologists providing a wide range of support for geologic hazard evaluation, Seismic resiliency program development, geotechnical assessments, Seismic risk assessment and management for all company business lines. Our goal is to support safe, reliable, and affordable energy delivery, regulatory compliance, and efficient business operations.



The Geosciences Department has responsibility for providing expert insights on existing, potential modifications to, and proposed PG&E facilities and infrastructure associated with earthquake and other geologic hazards, as well as erosion issues and geotechnical conditions. This group is also chartered with continuing to develop state of the art analytical insights, tools, and assessments of new data and interpretation of existing data with emergent technologies in geosciences, geotechnical engineering and seismic engineering. In particular, the Department develops the seismic hazard information and performs risk analyses for PG&E's infrastructure including critical facilities such as the Diablo Canyon NPP, dams, facilities, and gas and electric transmission lines.



Position Summary

Provide engineering, seismological, geotechnical, and geological services for all PG&E facilities with regard to earthquake and geologic risks. Research, prepare for, and respond to seismic and geologic events throughout the PG&E service territory and beyond



Qualifications

Minimum

  *   Bachelor of Sciences Degree
  *   8 years related experience



Desired

  *   Masters in a relevant science
  *   Professional Engineer Certification
  *   Displays advanced understanding and ability of the following:
  *   Demonstrates skill in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems
  *   Demonstrates skill in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions
  *   Uses expertise to counsel or guide individuals with regard to problems to be resolved on legal, financial, scientific, technical, or other professional principles
  *   Develops new models or methodologies, selects applicable projects, directs researchers as required, monitors, gathers and analyzes information, determines potential impacts, and integrates results to engineering and operations. Publish results as appropriate
  *   Provides engineering technical direction/oversight in the development of detailed designs for safety, good engineering practices, code and regulatory compliances, and established performance objectives
  *   Identify and manage the most significant (geologic or earthquake) risks facing PG&E.





Responsibilities

  *   Solves complex problems and takes a broad perspective to identify innovative solutions.
  *   May manage cross-functional projects or initiatives.
  *   Ensure that PG&E facilities are safe from geological and seismic hazards.
  *   Perform geological, geotechnical, and structural evaluations.
  *   Recommend mitigation of geologic hazards.
  *   Advise on route planning for new gas and electric transmission and distribution lines.
  *   Establish protocols for damage assessment of buildings for life safety after significant earthquakes, seismic retrofitting of critical facilities.
  *   Provide high overall quality of service as measured by regulatory agreements and approvals.
  *   Facilitate interactions with regulatory agencies.
  *   Influence regulators by making them aware and knowledgeable about emerging seismic safety lessons and assisting them in developing appropriate regulatory requirements.
  *   Provide up-to-date information on relevant and emerging earthquake issues to PG&E officers and other key stakeholders.
