Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher in Atmospheric Chemistry at UC Irvine: Reactivity of the Remote Troposphere

The successful candidate will work with Prof. Michael Prather and his group in the Department of Earth System Science at UC Irvine (https://www.ess.uci.edu/group/prather/home <https://www.ess.uci.edu/group/prather/home>), in support of the NASA Atmospheric Tomography EVS-2 mission (ATom; https://espo.nasa.gov/atom/content/ATom <https://espo.nasa.gov/atom/content/ATom>). The main focus of research will be understanding of the chemical heterogeneity of the remote troposphere based on ATom measurements, identification of chemical species most important in controlling the reactivity of ozone and methane in the remote troposphere, and how well globals are able to reproduce observed patterns of heterogeneity. The candidate will have primary responsibility for generation of a modeling data stream (MDS) including observations from all four ATom deployments, distribution of the MDS to participating model groups and archival on the public ATom data repository, performing simulations with the UC Irvine chemical transport model (CTM) based on the MDS, and the first opportunity to analyze the results of these simulations and model-measurement comparisons. The postdoctoral researcher will also have the opportunity to develop their own original sub-project, aligned with ATom objectives, and in collaboration with investigators participating in the ATom mission, such as at NOAA and NCAR. The position will be located at UC Irvine, but will involve in-person and remote interactions with other teams participating in ATom research.

Basic Qualifications: PhD in atmospheric science, chemistry, or a related field.

Additional Qualifications: Good programming skills in Matlab, Python, or a similar language, as well as experience working in a Linux environment, are necessary. Experience conducting simulations with CTMs, working with output from models and large volumes of data, and familiarity with file formats such as NetCDF are preferable.

The initial term of the appointment will 12 months, with the possibility of extension based on performance and availability of funding. For primary consideration, apply by February 18, 2019. Position is open until filled. Preferred start date would be March 2019.
