The Associate Scientist contributes to the development data assimilation for the coupled Earth system. A special focus will be the use of ensembles of data assimilation (EDA) to estimate cross-covariances between the atmospheric and oceanic background errors. This position also contributes to the implementation of the EDA in the OOPS-JEDI system and to the implementation optimized mathematical algorithms to accelerate and improve the convergence of EDA, such as block Krylov methods. Other aspects of coupled data assimilation, such as contribution to the development of coupled observation operators or coupled data assimilation solvers, will be addressed as needed.

This position will be located at the UCAR Foothills Campus (FL4) in Boulder, CO.

Responsibilities:
* Contributes to design, implementation and validation of ensembles of data assimilation in OOPS-JEDI under supervision of the project lead and scientists of the JEDI project team
* Contributes to design, implementation and validation of JEDI covariance matrix for coupled earth-system applications, under supervision of scientists of the JEDI project team
* Contributes to design, implementation and validation of coupled JEDI/UFO operators, under supervision of scientists and software engineers in the JEDI project team and in collaboration with scientists at JCSDA partner agencies
