CLIMATE RESILIENCE POSTDOCTORAL FELLOW

The University of Belize through its Environmental Research Institute, and in partnership with Northeastern University, announces a postdoctoral research fellowship focused on climate resilience of coastal and marine areas. The fellowships is on a full-time basis for a two-year period, starting May 2019 and ending May 2021.

The fellowship position is primarily focused on research in building the resilience of coral reef, mangrove or sea grass ecosystems to climate change, thereby ensuring continued provision of goods and services that support livelihoods within the coastal zone of Belize. It also involves some teaching within the university’s relevant undergraduate and graduate programs and providing scientific input at the national level.  The position will be primarily based at the University of Belize campus, with up to 2 months at Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center (Ries Lab) in Nahant, Massachusetts, USA.

OBJECTIVES

The main objectives of the fellowship are:


  1.  To develop and implement a research program, inclusive of the development of grant proposals for funding the research, which investigates the impacts of climate change on marine ecosystems, and tools/strategies for building climate resilience in the fisheries and tourism sectors.
  2.  To teach one undergraduate course and supervise 1 graduate student enrolled in graduate programs offered at UB.
  3.  To provide technical advice and represent the University through the ERI on national committees and at national consultations/workshops.
  4.  To assist with and contribute to at least one technical consultancy per year in area of technical expertise.

DELIVERABLES

At the end of the fellowship the following outputs are expected:


  1.  Two-year climate resilience research plan developed and implemented
  2.  Two journal papers submitted to peer review journals for publication
  3.  Annual technical reports and presentations on work and findings to UB ERI partners/stakeholders
  4.  One undergraduate course delivered and one graduate thesis supervised at UB annually
  5.  One technical consultancy or funded grant proposal completed

  *   Curriculum vitae
  *   Two letters of recommendation on the applicant’s academic background
  *   Two letters of recommendation on the applicant’s professional background
  *   A current police record no older than three months

DURATION OF CONTRACT

This fellowship is expected to run for two years, with a three-month probationary period. Renewal will be based on satisfactory completion of deliverables at the end of every year.

SKILLS AND COMPETENCY REQUIRED


  *   PhD degree in marine ecology, coastal ecology or related field with a good understanding of the ecology of coral reefs and associated ecosystems
  *   Sound knowledge of climate change impacts on tropical marine ecosystems including coral reefs, seagrass and mangroves, and building climate resilience into ecosystems
  *   At least 3 years of teaching experience and supervision of student researchers
  *   Excellent English communication and writing skills
  *   Good research and organizational skills
  *   Proven publication record with over 5 articles published in peer reviewed journals
  *   Strong interpersonal skills
  *   Ability to take initiative and work to meet deadlines
