We invite applications for a PhD position at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science (IAC) at ETH Zurich (Switzerland).

Project background

Long-term weather predictions on weekly to monthly timescales are crucial for a wide range of sectors. The stratosphere contributes to this predictability in the aftermath of extreme stratospheric events, so-called sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) events. These events can lead to persistent cold weather over large parts of the Northern Hemisphere and thereby increase long-term predictability. Less is known about the origin and predictability of SSW events themselves.

Job description

The goal of this project is to investigate the wave dynamics and predictability of extreme stratospheric events. We are looking for a candidate for a PhD position in the group of D. Domeisen at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science at ETH Zurich. The project will address the predictability of the stratosphere on sub-seasonal to seasonal timescales using tools ranging from simple to complex numerical models. The PhD candidate will work on the theory of SSW events, perform model simulations, and perform data analysis. The aim is to advance our understanding of the causes and predictability of sudden stratospheric warming events.

Your profile

The candidate is expected to have a Master's degree in atmospheric science, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field, with a strong interest in atmospheric fluid dynamics. A background in atmospheric dynamics is an advantage. Excellent coding skills are an advantage. The candidate should speak English fluently, and have excellent communication skills.
