The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (DEOHS) Environmental Health (EH) is seeking a full-time Research Scientist 2 who reports to the EH Laboratory Director and works directly with Laboratory team (three staff scientists) and multiple UW and external clients through Environmental Health Laboratory, service track, and the Trace Organics Analysis Center (TOAC), research track. The EH Lab service track provides high quality industrial hygiene services and sample analysis for the benefit of workers and employers in Washington State. The core state funding is approximately $826K per biennium. Research track funding is provided through multiple resources including a large self-sustaining cost center, federal and state funds, and sub-contracts. The EH Laboratory is housed in an academic department with undergraduate and graduate degree offerings. The academic training often incorporates hands-on laboratory training and the EH Laboratory provides many opportunities for students to gain experience with benchwork and use of complex equipment.

Specific duties of the position include:

Laboratory Activities:

Perform analytical procedures following established protocols for in-house developed, NIOSH, OSHA or EPA methods, for various analytes including: organic volatiles, semi-volatiles, and metals, in various matrices, that include occupational health samples, compressed air, environmental matrices, biological fluids and tissues. Carry out routine sample preparation for sample sets of various size involving bulk sample preparation, solid phase extraction (SPE), solvent extractions, sample filtration/clean-up and concentration. Many analyses are for trace-level contaminants and require attention to detail to achieve quality control (QC) goals. Operate various computer-controlled instruments:  GC-MS, HPLC, FTIR, ICP-MS, LC-MS, XRD. Perform routine instrument calibration/maintenance and minor trouble-shooting. Perform bench-level experimental work in method development and research in the fields of industrial hygiene, environmental health, and occupational health.

Quality Control: Successfully complete internal and external QC performance tests. Perform QC/QA & compliance task including control charting and data compilation.

Laboratory Data/Information/Management: Analyze and manipulate analytical data and prepare written reports of analytical activities. Perform laboratory support tasks including sample login, maintenance of sample records and database, ordering of supplies, equipment inventory and archiving. Document laboratory activity in laboratory notebook, instrument logs, and track project-specific time for monthly billings. Other duties as required.   Support lab users when basic instrument or equipment operation questions arise.  Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Bachelors degree in chemistry, biochemistry, or other related field with a minimum of two years of related experience. A significant portion of the work experience should be related to analytical chemistry. Working knowledge of quantitative analysis; previous preparation of bulk samples; familiar with Excel and Word software; working knowledge of common operations in Windows OS; and basic knowledge of statistics and quality assurance measures. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, analytical, and communication skills

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except where there are legal requirements such as license/certification/registration.

Desired:

Three or more years of experience working in an analytical chemistry laboratory. Experience with soil/dust analysis and/or metabolite analysis. Working knowledge of at least one Agilent instrument operation software product (MassHunter, Chem-station). Completion of instrument focused training. Experience with a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) and/or database system. Experience as an analyst in an ISO/IEC 17025 certified laboratory.  An interest to learn about new analytical methodology, and collaboratively develop/verify methods.
