Job Description

Job Title: Associate Scientist III - Statistical Meteorologist

Location: Boulder, Colorado

Type: Full-time, Exempt

Position Term: 1-year term position, with the possibility of extension

Relocation: No relocation package is offered for this position.

Work Authorization:

U.S. Citizenship, Permanent Residency, or other protected status under 8
U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3) is required for this position.

UCAR/NCAR will not sponsor a work visa (e.g., J-1, H1-B, etc.) for this
position.

Where You Will Work:

Located in Boulder, Colorado, the National Center for Atmospheric Research
(NCAR) is one of the world's premier scientific institutions, with an
internationally recognized staff and research program dedicated to advancing
knowledge, providing community-based resources, and building human capacity
in the atmospheric and related sciences. NCAR is sponsored by the National
Science Foundation (NSF) and managed by the University Corporation for
Atmospheric Research (UCAR).

What You Will Do:

This is a new, 1-year term position with potential extension to a permanent
position at NCAR. The new hire will conduct research related to testing and
evaluation (T&E) of Numerical Weather Prediction (NWP) models. The JNT is
host to the Developmental Testbed Center (DTC), which is responsible for
accelerating the transition of research innovations into operations. JNT and
DTC are also responsible for developing and supporting the enhanced Model
Evaluation Tools (METplus), which is a suite of verification tools used to
statistically evaluate the output of NWP models. This work will include
providing statistical support for both T&E and METplus software development
activities. It will also include collaboration with external stakeholders to
identify their verification needs and work with them to adopt METplus. The
successful candidate will work with a research team at NCAR dedicated to
improving and understanding NWP model performance, and will interact with
model development partners at NCAR, NOAA, and in the broader
weather-water-climate community to provide statistically robust verification
capabilities for the community.

The position is within the Joint Numerical Testbed (JNT) program of the
Research Applications Laboratory (RAL) at NCAR in Boulder, CO, USA.

Responsibilities:

The incumbent's responsibilities include, but are not be limited to:

. Provide statistical guidance to scientists and engineers to design
or enhance existing testing and verification frameworks used for T&E
activities.

. Support the development and application of the METplus framework
across multiple platforms and environments using a combination of Python,
shell scripts, and workflow management packages.

. Serve as a point of contact to geographically and institutionally
diverse organizations during their transition to METplus.

. Assist in analyzing and evaluating model forecasts or operational
NWP output results.

. Provide education, outreach and community services related to
projects on behalf of NCAR and DTC (e.g. contributions to documentation,
presentations at tutorials and workshops, and user support for METplus
through helpdesk and user forums).

. Represent NCAR and DTC at major national and international meetings
and conferences, interact with the international science community to
advocate and promote verification science and technology. Publish results of
testing and evaluation efforts in reports and peer-reviewed publications.

What You Need:

Education and Years of Experience:

. Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in atmospheric sciences, earth
sciences, mathematics, statistics, or closely related discipline plus three
to five years experience as an Associate Scientist II or equivalent position
in atmospheric modeling or analysis.

. A master's degree in one of these fields is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

. Advanced knowledge of atmospheric science.

. Extensive knowledge of statistics and forecast verification.

. Demonstrated skill working in Unix or Linux computing environments
and using scripting languages or graphical display tools (e.g. Python, NCL,
R).

. Knowledge of NWP systems and common meteorological data structures
and formats (e.g., NetCDF, GRIB).

. Ability to understand and document evaluation requirements related
to regional and global prediction (e.g. data assimilation, components of a
coupled system, and ensemble prediction.)

. Strong skills working collaboratively in a team.

. Excellent written and oral skills.

Desired but not required:

. Knowledge of METplus

. Familiarity with one of the following: a model based on the Finite
Volume Cubed-Sphere Dynamical Core (FV3) , the Weather Researching and
Forecasting (WRF) model, the Model Prediction Across Scales (MPAS), or the
Community Earth System Model (CESM).

. Familiarity with code management practices and software (e.g.,
Subversion and Git).

. Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., Fortran, C/C++) with a
variety of compilers (e.g., GNU, PGI, Intel).

What's in it for You:
