Postdoctoral Research Scientist in Lagrangian Sea-Ice Modelling
The Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences Program and the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment at Princeton University, in association with NOAA’s Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (GFDL), seeks a postdoctoral or more senior researcher to develop a Lagrangian model of sea-ice dynamics for use in regional and global ocean circulation models.
This work will involve exploring innovative approaches to modeling sea ice, with a focus on representing sea ice floes, and collections of floes, as Lagrangian elements. The project aims to construct an operational Lagrangian sea-ice model, which can be tested against existing grid-based numerical models of sea-ice. The Lagrangian sea-ice model will be used to study the large-scale properties of sea ice, which are emergent from individual floe interactions.
The ideal candidate has a strong background in one or more areas among sea-ice dynamics, material science, geophysical fluid dynamics, soft-matter science, and numerical methods. Experience with scientific software development, Lagrangian methods, discrete-element methods or smoothed particle hydrodynamics solvers will be advantageous in this research.
Candidates must have a Ph.D. in either applied mathematics, physics, cryosphere, or a related field. Initial appointment is for one year with the possibility of renewal subject to satisfactory performance and available funding.
Complete applications, including a CV, publication list, a statement of research interests, and contact information of 3 references should be submitted by September 15, 2019 for full consideration. Applicants should apply online https://www.princeton.edu/acad-positions/position/12908. For more information about the research project and application process, please contact Alistair Adcroft (aadcroft at princeton.edu<mailto:aadcroft at princeton.edu>) and Olga Sergienko (osergien at princeton.edu<mailto:osergien at princeton.edu>).
This position is subject to the University’s background check policy.
Princeton University is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law.
