ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES: AMHERST COLLEGE
Environmental Scientist

The Department of Environmental Studies at Amherst College invites applications for a tenure-track
environmental scientist at the rank of assistant professor whose research intersects with the challenges of
climate change. The department is looking for a person with broad intellectual interests who is
committed to teaching and working at a liberal arts college. The appointment will begin on July 1, 2020.
Amherst College is one of the most diverse liberal arts colleges in the country. Within the last decade, the
college has profoundly transformed its student body in terms of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, race,
sexuality and gender identity, and nationality. Today, nearly one-quarter of Amherst’s students are Pell
grant recipients; 45 percent of our students identify as domestic students of color; and 10 percent of our
students are international students. Our expectation is that the successful candidate for this position will
excel at teaching and mentoring students who are broadly diverse with regard to race, ethnicity,
socioeconomic status, gender, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion. Amherst College has an
Office of Environmental Sustainability and is committed to a Climate Action Plan that will bring the
college to carbon neutrality by 2030. Amherst also supports the onsite Book and Plow Farm.

The successful candidate is expected to establish a high-quality research program that involves
undergraduates. Start-up funding, additional forms of institutional support, state-of-the-art facilities, and
a generous leave policy are available to support faculty. Successful candidates will have a strong
grounding in quantitative methods and are expected to develop an environmental science course and
additional courses in their specialization, and participate in interdisciplinary team-taught introductory
and/or senior capstone courses in environmental studies. A Ph.D. is required, and postdoctoral experience
is preferred.

Candidates are asked to submit electronically to https://apply.interfolio.com/64146 a cover letter,
curriculum vitae, and separate research and teaching statements and to arrange for three confidential
letters of recommendation. Review of applications will begin on October 7, 2019, and applications
received by this date will receive full consideration. The search will remain open until the position is
filled.
