Job Description

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral research associate with a strong background in atmospheric chemistry and modeling of organic aerosols. The candidate will work on including new organic aerosol chemistry processes within box models including a cloud parcel model, the Weather Research and Forecasting model coupled to chemistry (WRF-Chem) and the global Energy Exascale Earth System Model (E3SM).

Treatments of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) constitute some of the least understood aspects of aerosols and their interactions with clouds and radiation. This project focuses on including new SOA treatments that affect the mass, number, size distribution and optical properties of SOA including brown carbon. The candidate will work on integrating SOA process-level insights from laboratory and field measurements and developing and testing model parameterizations. WRF-Chem and E3SM predictions will be evaluated with a range of recent laboratory and field measurements, collected by the Atmospheric Radiation Measurements (ARM) and Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory (EMSL) facilities. The objective is to build cutting-edge integrative-predictive models, which will be used to understand the role of SOA in aerosol-cloud interactions.

The ideal candidate will have prior experience and demonstrated abilities in working with three dimensional chemical transport models such as WRF-Chem and CESM, analyzing model predictions, and evaluating them with measurements. The candidate will work in a highly collaborative environment, and be responsible for building and debugging efficient organic aerosol modeling algorithms. A strong knowledge of FORTRAN and working with Linux/Unix environments are needed. The position will provide many opportunities to interact with both aerosol measurement experts and atmospheric modelers at PNNL, and other national laboratories and Universities.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

·      Familiarity with SOA and organic aerosol chemistry treatments

·      Familiarity with three dimensional chemical transport models such as WRF-Chem and CESM

·      Familiarity with high performance and parallel computing Linux/Unix), computer languages (FORTRAN, Python, etc.), data analysis tools and techniques (R, NCL, Matlab, IDL, etc.)

·      Experience analyzing meteorological, chemical, and aerosol measurements

·      Track record of high-quality publications in peer-reviewed journals

·      Knowledge of statistical data analysis techniques such as application of machine learning tools for model and measurement data analysis are desirable.

·      Strong communication skills
