Summary

The Old Dominion University’s Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmosphere
sciences invites applications for a PostdoctoralAssociate to work with
Dr. Richard
Zimmerman and Dr. Victoria Hill. Applicant will work on a NASA-funded
project to evaluate the use of high spatial resolution multispectral
imagery for near coastal environments including seagrass meadows and kelp
forests, as well as marginal ice zones in the Arctic Ocean. Opportunity
exists to participate in other projects involving carbon cycling in coastal
environments, ecosystem modeling and ecological physiology of aquatic
macrophytes, phytoplankton and ice algae.  Applicant must have a Ph.D. in
oceanography or a related discipline completed by the time of appointment,
with strong mathematical skills. Interests in remote sensing and GIS is a
plus.  Highest priority will be given to applicants with experience in
ocean color remote sensing, marine bio-optics and GIS, as well as
programming knowledge of MATLAB®, IDL®, python, R, Fortran and/or
C++.  Ability to work with multiple PI’s and students in a collaborative
environment is imperative.  The successful candidate will be anemployee of
the Old Dominion University Research Foundation, entitled to employee
benefits applicable to Post-Doctoral full-time status employees including
health care. The position is currently funded for one year, with possibility
 of annual renewal contingentupon satisfactory performance and funding

Job Responsibilities:

The postdoctoral experience provides individuals who have recently
completed a doctoral degree with a full-time program of advanced academic
preparation and research training under the guidance of a supervising
faculty mentor. Postdoctoral appointments are temporary by nature and are
designed to develop the postdoctoral scholar as an independent scientist
and to enhance their professional skills in academia.  Postdoctoral Scholar
positions are typically subject to the availability of funds and are not
eligible for layoff or recall status.

*1.  Data collection, processing and analysis.*

2.  Assists faculty researchers and other collaborators, or may act
independently, in planning and designing research experiments; establishing
priorities and recommending schedules, time tables and costs.

3.  Presentation of project results to internal and external parties.

4.  Operates specialized scientific equipment.

5.  Performs statistical, spatial and optical analyses, including selecting
the appropriate procedures, preparing data for analysis, judging validity
and reliability of data, designing and writing programs to perform
analyses, and producing written reports on the result of the analyses.

6.  Effectively uses available technology to facilitate the success of the
project.

7.  Liaisons with other departments, outside collaborators, and others to
ensure success of project.

8.  Engages in fieldwork and writing of technical publications and reports.

9.  May supervise classified staff, graduate assistants, or student
employees.

10.May be responsible for training staff, graduate assistants, or student
employees.

11. Other duties, as assigned.
