Location: Scientific Aviation, Boulder, CO

Salary: Starting at $40K + benefits, depending on experience

Scientific Aviation has an opening for a flight science technician to work on airborne atmospheric measurements from both unmanned drone platforms and manned fixed-wing aircraft. This position will initially, and primarily, work on the unmanned drone projects, with the potential to work on manned aircraft projects as needed.

The Flight Science Technician will be responsible for piloting unmanned aircraft and conducting scientific field data acquisition in support of atmospheric measurement projects. As a drone pilot, you will be required to either currently hold or successfully obtain an FAA Part 107 certification within the first few weeks of employment. As a field technician, you will be expected to travel frequently and regularly to measurement sites across North America to acquire high quality data in a safe, responsible, effective, and compliant manner. As a manned aircraft technician, you will need to be comfortable flying in small, single-engine aircraft at low altitudes and potentially turbulent conditions (such as in a summer time convective boundary layer). General responsibilities include field calibrations, troubleshooting, data analysis, logistics, and project planning / coordination. The Flight Science Technician takes direction from the Senior Scientist or Project Manager on a given project.

Scientific Aviation is small, but quickly growing, company with a very team-oriented and highly collaborative work environment. The successful flight science technician will be highly flexible and adaptable to changes in scope of work, required tasks and priorities, and timing of projects (our work is very dependent on weather conditions), possess strong attention to detail, exhibit exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, and have an interest in general aviation. This is a fun environment to work in, but the work is also very challenging!

Description of Duties:

  * Responsible for the safe and effective operation of unmanned quadcopters and hexacopters (DJI Matrice), including risk management and mitigation
  * Responsible for transport of drones and equipment to and from measurement sites in the company-owned vehicle
  * Take an active role in flight planning, especially with regard to flight safety, compliance, airspace reviews, and all other operations
  * Data acquisition of atmospheric measurements using a variety of sensors and chemical analyzers to meet project requirements
  * Calibrations and maintenance of technical and scientific instrumentation
  * Ability and willingness to learn the atmospheric measurement instrumentation, methods, and data analysis used by Scientific Aviation
  * Analysis of scientific data and reporting of results
  * Perform basic-to-moderate level programming in Python
  * Problem-solving: solve real-time problems, both technical and mechanical, and perform limited equipment repairs in the field
  * Represent Scientific Aviation with professionalism and a positive attitude. The Flight Science Technician will often be required to interact with high-profile clients on site.
  * Travel: mobility and flexibility is required for this position. Travel will be 25-75% of the time, to locations throughout North America and potentially abroad, and often includes weekend days. The majority of Scientific Aviation’s drone measurement sites are in oil and gas production fields and are often in relatively rural locations.

Required Qualifications:

  * Minimum of a Bachelors degree in a scientific discipline
  * Some familiarity with (or coursework in) basic atmospheric sciences
  * Experience working in a scientific research setting

  * Part 107 certificate or ability to obtain one within the first few weeks of work (this may require studying prior to starting work).
  * Valid US Passport and Driver’s License
  *   Clean driving record
  * Legal right to work in the U.S.
  * Must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screen; subject to random drug screens
  * Ability to travel regularly and work a non-standard work schedule
  * Ability to work in a small team environment and take on other tasking as necessary to achieve mission goals
  * Ability to communicate effectively and professionally with clients in the field

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Experience with Python programming language
