Berkeley Lab’s Energy Geosciences<https://eesa.lbl.gov/our-divisions/energy-geosciences/> Division has an opening for a Geomechanic Postdoctoral Scholar. The purpose of this position is to conduct research in short-to-long term permeability response of faults during the full earthquake cycle. The incumbent will be involved in different research projects developed at LBNL, that aim at (i) understanding the effects of fault permeability variations on the growth of aseismic to seismic slip caused by fluid injection, (ii) exploring the effects of remote earthquakes on faults’ permeability and (iii) imaging the long term post rupture three-dimensional evolution of eventual fault hydraulic channeling and sealing. In all projects, the approach relies on in situ probing of hydromechanical perturbations in fault zones using SIMFIP probes developed at LBNL.



The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to play a key role in these projects by contributing to achieve the following objectives:

·         Provide technical inputs in processing the different types of SIMFIP probes signals, with applications to monitoring of faulted host rock/cap rock layers’ integrity. We are particularly interested in collaborators who will bring innovative methods such as machine learning techniques applied to signal processing.

·         Develop both analytical and fully coupled numerical hydromechanical modeling solutions to analyze the experiments data. We are interested in collaborators who are able to imagine and implement new permeability constitutive laws to better describe the three-dimensional permeability evolution of activated fault zones.



What You Will Do:

·         Participate to field experiments where the SIMFIP probe is used.

·         Interact with LBNL engineers during the pre-processing of the experiment data.

·         Develop new multivariate methods to process SIMFIP signals, and to statistically compare different signal attributes across different experiments.

·         Use, and eventually develop fully coupled hydromechanical numerical models to analyze data

·         Co-author conference papers, and refereed journal articles.

·         Prepare outreach materials, technical reports, and presentations for internal and external audiences.

·         Periodic travel to conferences.



What is Required:

·         Recent Ph.D. in a related scientific field (e.g. energy and engineering, geomechanics, hydromechanics).

·         Expertise in fractures and fault zones rheology.

·         Research experience in laboratory and/or field experimental research on fault zones.

·         Knowledge in geomechanical numerical modeling.

·         Demonstrated ability to work independently, uncover problems, and to identify and initiate appropriate actions for resolution.

·         Excellent interpersonal and communication skills both in written and oral.



Additional Desired Qualifications:

·         Knowledge in signal processing and/or big data processing techniques.

Notes:

·         This is a full time, 1 year, postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 4 years paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

·         Full-time, M-F, exempt (monthly paid) from overtime pay.

·         This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

·         Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
